Re: 2005 SoCon Men's Basketball Tournament

Elon knocks off Wofford.

Quote:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Colin Wyatt scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Elon to a 64-58 win over Wofford on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament.

No. 4 North seed Elon (8-22) will play Davidson, the league's only team to go unbeaten in the regular season and the No. 1 South seed, in the second round Thursday.

Eric Marshall hit a 3-pointer that pulled No. 5 South seed Wofford (14-14) within 61-58 with 17 seconds left, but Wyatt hit three free throws to seal the victory.

Scottie Rice scored 11 for Elon before fouling out.

Adrien Borders led Wofford with 15 points, and Marshall added 14.

Elon took a 35-24 lead when Chris Chalko hit a 3 on its first possession of the second half, but Rice quickly picked up his third foul and Wofford quickly narrowed the gap.

The Terriers got within 44-43 on an Eric Marshall layup with 11:22 left, and they took a 49-48 lead on a Greg Taylor layup with 7:29 left. Elon clinched the game at the free throw line, going 19-of-23 compared to just 8-of-14 for the Terriers.

Re: 2005 SoCon Men's Basketball Tournament

Georgia Southern moves on to face UNCG.

Quote:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Elton Nesbitt scored 14 points to lead Georgia Southern to a 69-57 victory over Western Carolina on Wednesday in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

Georgia Southern (18-12) will play UNC-Greensboro in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Rans Brempong led Western Carolina (8-22) with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles led by as much as 53-34 in the second half, and the Catamounts never came closer than 35-26, when Antonio Russell opened the half with a 3-pointer.

Georgia Southern went on a 13-4 run to pull away from a tie game midway through the first half, and took a 35-23 lead into halftime.

It was the Golden Eagles' first win this season when they scored less than 70 points.

Jean Francois scored 13 points for Georgia Southern, and Louis Graham added 10.

Trey Hopkins added 11 points, with eight coming on free throws.

Re: 2005 SoCon Men's Basketball Tournament

Tim Smith went off on the Paladins.

Quote:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Tim Smith scored 37 points to lead East Tennessee State to an 87-84 upset win over Furman on Wednesday night in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

No. 5 North seed East Tennessee State (10-18) will face No. 1 North seed and tournament host Chattanooga in a quarterfinal game Thursday.

Robby Bostain led five players in double figures for No. 4 South seed Furman (16-13) with 16 points. Moussa Diagne had 15 points, Tony Carter 14, Ben Earle 12 and Quan Prowell 11.

Ben Rhoda added 17 points for ETSU, while Andrew Reed had 10.

Bostain had a clean look from the left wing at a would-be tying basket as time expired, but the shot was long and the Buccaneers' chances for a third-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance stayed alive.

ETSU led by as much as 68-56 in the second half, but an Earle 3-pointer with 3:53 left capped a 21-8 Furman run and gave the Paladins their first lead at 77-76.

Smith, a two-time tournament MVP, answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner, and buckets from Rhoda, Reed and Dillion Sneed gave the Buccaneers an 84-79 lead they would not relinquish.

ETSU led the entire fast-paced first half, thanks to Smith's 21 points, and took a 45-40 halftime lead.

Re: 2005 SoCon Men's Basketball Tournament

App State vs. Charleston in the Quarters. Let's get it on. Tomorrow should be some good basketball.

Quote:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Noah Brown scored 11 points to lead Appalachian State to a 68-59 win over The Citadel on Wednesday night in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

No. 3 North seed Appalachian State (17-11) will play No. 2 South seed College of Charleston in a quarterfinal game Thursday.

Donny McLendon scored 30 points and hit five 3-pointers for No. 6 South seed The Citadel (12-16), the only Bulldog in double figures.

D.J. Thompson and Jeremy Clayton scored 10 points each for Appalachian State.

The Bulldogs had a 42-38 lead with 11:28 left, but two Clayton slam dunks in 10 seconds capped a 12-1 Appalachian State run and gave the Mountaineers a 50-43 lead with nine minutes remaining.

The Citadel cut the score to 52-51 minutes later, but Appalachian State's D.J. Thompson responded with a four-point play to up the lead to 56-51 with 6:29 left. The Bulldogs would get no closer than three points after that.

Neither team had more than a five-point lead in the first half, which ended with Appalachian State leading 28-26.

Re: 2005 SoCon Men's Basketball Tournament

Davidson rolls along.

Quote:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) Brendan Winters scored 19 points to lead Davidson to a 67-53 win over Elon Thursday afternoon in the Southern Conference tournament quarterfinals.

No. 1 South seed Davidson (21-7) will play either No. 2 North seed UNC-Greensboro or No. 3 South seed Georgia Southern in semifinals Friday.

Winters, the SoCon Player of the Year, was the only Davidson player in double figures.

Chris Chalko and LeVonn Jordan led No. 4t the break.

Davidson went on a 17-4 run early in the second half to break ahead. Winters capped the spurt with a deep 3-pointer as the shot-clock expired to give Davidson a 49-31 lead with 11:56 remaining.

Official Ted Valentine gave Elon coach Ernie Nestor a technical foul with 13:54 left when Nestor got upset after he thought Jordan was fouled while driving to the basket.

Re: 2005 SoCon Men's Basketball Tournament

Davidson and UNCG go at it in the Semis now.

Quote:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Ronnie Burrell hit an 8-foot jumper in the final minute to lift UNC-Greensboro to a 73-71 win over Georgia Southern in a Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday.

No. 2 North seed UNC-Greensboro (17-11) will play No. 1 South seed Davidson, the league's only unbeaten team, in the semifinals Friday.

Burrell's jumper gave the Spartans their first lead of the game.

Georgia Southern's Elton Nesbitt had a chance to win it for the Eagles, but his running 25-footer clanked off the rim and backboard.

Ricky Hickman led the Spartans with 22 points. Burrell had 14, followed by Ray Bristow with 13 and Kyle Hines with 10.

Nesbitt led No. 3 South seed Georgia Southern (18-13) with 16 points. Louis Graham scored 15 for the Eagles, Donte Gennie had 13 and Terry Williams 11.

The Spartans rallied from a 50-40 deficit early in the second half to tie the game at 57 on a Bristow jumper with 11:08 left. Neither team led by more than five after that.
