Unhappy Davidson's Disappointing Start

I think that Davidson has perhaps the most talented team that it has fielded in a number of years. That's what makes their disappointing start so difficult to understand. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers - and all at seemingly crucial times. I don't think many expected Davidson to really compete with Texas Tech or North Carolina but to lose by 30+ and commit all those turnovers! It was difficult to watch.

After holding an 11-point half-time lead and a 6-point lead with 4 minutes to play against Charleston last night, the team fell apart like a cheap suit. The culprit was more of the same - dumb turnovers at crucial times. Well, it's a good thing they've recruited a point guard. Too bad he can't suit up now.

I'd be interested to know what others think. It is a long season and anything's possible, but improved guard play is a must.

I will say that the tough schedule that Davidson has played has not helped. I mean you guys have played at Charleston, at Texas Tech and a neutral game against UNC. All of those games are difficult to win, even at home, let alone at the beginning of the year at a hostile environment, with new guards = recipe for disaster.

I think you can take solace in the fact that Bob McKillop is one of the best coaches in the country and I wouldn't be shocked if the Wildcats were dancing again.

However, Logan Kosmalski has got to stop getting in foul trouble with stupid fouls. Ian Johnson is a great sixth man kind of big man for Davidson, but it negates the advantage Davidson has there if Logan is going to get in foul trouble every single game.

BTW, Welcome to the site.

Good Response

I agree with all of your comments. I also think that, based upon somewhat spotty play from Kosmalski and Grace early on and Johnson's obvious scoring ability, he may not be the sixth man for the whole season. Granted he doesn't have Kosmalski's body or Grace's experience, but Davidson just doesn't have a lot of established scorers right now, particularly on the inside. I must admit that expected Kosmalski to have a better offensive game, but that is probably unfairly based upon his older brother Landry's years at Davidson.

Anyway, it will be an interesting season. Charleston seems to be a good team as always, but perhaps without the go-to player they've had in the past. All the teams with the possible exception of Western seem to be improved. Chattanooga looks tough and has a good coach. I have to educate myself about the other teams in the conference.

I am sorry and shocked to hear that ETSU is leaving. That came as a big surprise. I also think that courting VMI to return to the conference would be a mistake - at least in basketball, they've done nothing to help the conference's RPI.

Just my thoughts. I like VMI as a school.

Chattanooga is going to be tough to beat because they may be avg. over 90 points per game this year.

With Champion, Pugh and Rogan all capable of scoring twenty points in any given game they make the Mocs tough to beat.

I think the rumor is that Gardner-Webb will replace ETSU. We'll see I guess.
