Allen won't force trade, and disrespects players who do

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/basket...22_sonx11.html

Quote:
NBA All-Stars are expected to be a little bit selfish. They're the ones who are supposed to ask for the ball.

This summer, more than a few asked for something more serious. Requesting a trade became the activity of choice around the league.

Peja Stojakovic said he wanted to be traded from Sacramento. Vince Carter said he didn't want to be a Raptor. Tracy McGrady orchestrated his way out of Orlando. It became so commonplace that Hornets guard Baron Davis released a statement through his publicist to say he liked playing in New Orleans but trusted his agent, who told him it might be in his best interest be traded.

Seattle guard Ray Allen hasn't asked for a trade, but he was asked about his opinion on other players' offseason requests yesterday.

"I myself, I don't respect it," he said. "You have to honor your contract. You sign a contract, regardless of what the rest of the league is making, you have to honor your contract.

"There are some unique situations where guys, you give the benefit of the doubt. But those guys are making a great deal of money, they owe it to their organization, they owe it to their teammates to stick it out. You can't just say, 'Trade me now because you guys didn't do anything over the summer.' "
Thus Sayeth Jesus

Didn't Ray negotiate his own contract that he signed with Milwaukee? Without an agent.

Is there anything in the contract that says you can't ask to be traded? I don't think so. I think Sugga Ray needs to stop trying to kiss up for an extension.

Guess what Ray Ray, I think anyone who buys an NBA team has an obligation to try to win an NBA championship instead of sucking their fanbase dry. If you can't pay to pla, sell your freaking team, so MJ can get back in the league.

It's nice to see Ray Allen come out and say something like this. At first I didn't like the VC for RA trade idea that was swirling around but I have to say I wouldn't mind it now. I liked to hear that Ray Allen actually wanted to play in Toronto.

You can ask to be traded. But you shouldn't threaten to sit out, dog it, etc. When you signed a long term contract you agreed to play your best for the team for the full length of the contract.

Who has done that? If your organization is crap, see New Jersey, you should trash them. David Stern is worrying about HSers in the NBA and he let someone buy an NBA team and then dimantle them for nothing. He basically allowed that owner to give Jersey fans the middle finger.

Well, I don't think anyone has threatened to do it publicly. What Ray is saying is that you should talk to the owner in private. Don't ask for a trade through your agent/publicist and the media, like VC, Peja, SAR and Baron did. The players are probably less likely to get their wish going to the media, becuase the team won't get many fair offers if other teams think they are desperate to trade a player. Not to mention that it must piss your teammates off, saying stuff like "i'll never win a championship with these guys".

The big problem is guaranteed contracts.

Forget these guys are professional athletes for a second. How long would an accountant make it if they followed your advice? How far would a professor make it in life if they trashed thier school everytime they did not get thier own way?

As an employee you have every right to go find a new situation UNLESS you have placed yourself in a position where you don't have that power. Generally to get that kinda security you have to give up something too. IN htis case to get a 6 year contract from the Raptors, Hornets, et al a player gives up the right to trash the organization, because in turn that organization can't just not pay him. It's a two way street.
