Stockpiling 1st round draft picks
Draft Acquired
2008 Sonics' own pick; could be top-5 selection
2008 From Suns in Kurt Thomas deal, July 2007
2009 Sonics' own pick
2009 From Spurs on Wednesday
2010 Sonics' own pick
2010 From Suns in Thomas deal, July 2007
Plus four 2nd round picks this year and a ton in the next two, all 1st rounders are unprotected.
If you put the potential relocation aside for a moment you have to give Presti a lot of credit for getting all those picks. The picks from Phoenix this year will be in the high 20s, the 2009 Spurs 1st rounder might be in the low 20s (depending on how fast they get old), but the 2010 Suns 1st rounder could be really valuable. Like John Hollinger said:

Didn't seem like a big deal with Phoenix's roster at the time, but now look at them. In the 2009-10 season, Shaq will be 37, Steve Nash will be 35, Grant Hill will be 37, and Raja Bell will be 33. With this trade, the value of that pick just went through the roof.
|
The next three years will probably decide how good this team can be, great cap flexibility, six 1st rounders to upgrade the talent on the roster and on top of that a GM who seems to know what he is doing.

Re: Stockpiling 1st round draft picks
The Sonics are on track on rebuilding. I like how they've shipped out big contracts for picks. They will be successful, but they need that little bit of luck. They better have some good vision and not draft bad players.

Re: Stockpiling 1st round draft picks
I really like how they were able to get what they could for Kurt Thomas and Wally Szczerbiak. Both those guys didn't fit into the rebuilding mode and they wanted to be on winning teams. Sending them out in exchange for some cap relief and a first round pick will serve the Sonics very well in the future.
And yes, in a couple years the Suns will be older. However, Steve Nash will still be freaking amazing, and they'll still have Barbosa and Amare.

Re: Stockpiling 1st round draft picks
The Sonics can't count on much help from first round picks inherited from San Antonio and Phoenix, though. Those will invariably be in the "certified crapshoot" segment of the draft. I suppose there could be some good opportunities to nab international players who still need a year or two of seasoning overseas before coming to the NBA.

Haha they should try and get Kurt Thomas again. It looks like he's responsible for most of those picks.

This is going to be an interesting project. I am not sure that PJ is the right coach for all of this grooming of young talent. Time will tell.

Re: Stockpiling 1st round draft picks
Stockpiling draft picks is a bad strategy. When you sign everyone on the same year, that means they most likely will expire the same year. Look at the Hawks and the Bulls. Atlanta has to make the tough choice between Williams and Smith. Chicago sucks this year, but even if they were a playoff team, they would be facing the tough choice of re-signing either Gordon or Deng.
Championship teams aren't built like that. You have to stagger your additions like the Spurs do.

Same deal. No championship teams are built from consecutive draft picks. | |
