OT: Question about Canada

A mod can delete this as soon as someone answers it, but I need some quick help on a question...

Whats some key differences between the Charter of Rights & Freedoms and the US Bill of Rights?

Yes, asking for school help on bb.net is an all-time low, but i got an exam in an hour and i have no clue what to put.

Re: OT: Question about Canada

The Charter of Rights and Freedoms has jurisdiction over both federal and provincial legislation.
I believe the US Bill of Rights only has jurisdiction over federal legislation?
Another important fact about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is that it's embedded in the Canadian Constitution and it can only be changed by an Ammending Formula(vote by at least 7 provinces totalling 50% of the population.
The Charter Of Rights also protects citizens from the government.

Sorry if that didn't help.

Re: OT: Question about Canada

Our Charter specifically prohibits different treatment on the basis of race, age, religion, nation of origin, and sexual orientation.

That's why we allow same sex marriages.

Quebec has, essentially, a veto. The infamous "notwithstanding" clause that allows them to supercede the Charter if following it would be contrary to the maintenance of their distinct society. Sound silly? Remember, Quebec is founded using French civil law, which among other things, places the burden of proof on the accused... "Guilty until proven innocent".

that's not true. subset 50, 51, a, b, whatever... something like that, entrenches "different" treatment, protection, and rights to specific groups of people (inuit, innu, first nations, metis, and those that can trace their herritage in full or to measured percentage, to these points.) as defined by race, nation of origin, and geneology.

That's actually the Canadian Human Rights Act, or the Ontario Human Rights Code.
