OT:Seahawks take undrafted Lumsden
Quote:
The Seattle Seahawks have have agreed to terms on a free-agent contract with McMaster Marauders running back Jesse Lumsden, TSN has learned.
He will attend the team's mini-camp in Seattle on Apr. 29.
Lumsden has made a career of steamrolling through his opponents, winning the 2004 Hec Crighton award as Canadian university football's top player.
Lumsden, the son of former CFLer Neil Lumsden, was nearly unstoppable last year, setting the CIS single season rushing record with 1,816 yards, the CIS single-season touchdown record (21) and the CIS career touchdown record (43). He also broke the OUA career rushing record with 4,328 yards

Great news. If the kid can't make it onto a practice squad in the NFL, he'll for sure get a job somewhere in the CFL.

Re: OT:Seahawks take undrafted Lumsden
good news
but it's weird how much press he gets. He wasn't even the best Canadian prospect this year. TSN is obsessed with him. I've seen him interviewed like 20 times this year. Two canadians were invited to the combine, and eventually got drafted first day, so TSN does another story on Lumsden

I found that strange is well. O.T Agewaye????? was picked in the second round, and it was a side note. Hell, I had never ever even heard of the guy, because he got zero coverage.
The two factors I would imagine are that he has a famous father, and also there is a certain allure of seeing how a big time Canadian university player can do in the NFL. Lumsden's career was arguably as good as any CIAU player ever, so he had alot of exposure from that.

Its BS how the the Kid from Stanford gets no Love what so far from the media. Oshiomogho Atogwe will be a good player in the NFL, I'd be suprise if Jesse ever plays a minute. I can guarantee you if he was white we would know alot more about him, remember all the love Carl English got? another pretty white boy.

Re: OT:Seahawks take undrafted Lumsden
It's because he played at a Canadian University. No CIS player has gone on to play in the NFL, as far as I know. The fact that he developed his career in Canada also makes him more of the hometown kid, and lets Canadians say "we can do it to!" to our American counterparts.
And besides, O.T. is very good, and everyone knows that. But it remains to be seen how Lumsden will be able to perform with the best players in the world. So naturally all eyes are on him.
edit: I'm a dirty liar. There have been 16 CIS players to make the NFL, and 8 of them were drafted. In fact, there are 3 CIS players on the Seahawks alone! Lumsden, Jean-Phillipe Darche the long Snapper, and Jerome Pathon. I had no idea they came out of the CIS.

Re: OT:Seahawks take undrafted Lumsden
Yeah, I think it's the fact that he's a CIS player. I think Lumsden is going to get drafted by a CFL team anyway so they can retain his rights if he gets released. The kid from Stanford was drafted in the third round, I think by St. Louis. I hate to say it but I hope Lumsden is a bust so he can play in the CFL.

but Canada's best prospect (Nick Kaczur) is white and he gets even less pub than Atogwe. So your guarantee isn't all that valid
Atogwe is awesome though. Supposedly around the 7th best safety this year, But Kaczur has a better future imo (and in the opinion of a lot of others) Lots of people think he'll be a starter down the road. Atogwe would probably be happy making the roster. And less people seem to know who Nick "white guy" Kaczur is

Re: OT:Seahawks take undrafted Lumsden
Lumsden will have the luxury of learning from one of the best RB's in the league in Shaun Alexander, and they are actually similar players as well. Seattle now has two Canadian RB's.
But the real Canadian gem is Atogwe. Undersized, but the guy is a beast. I was really hoping for my Titans to pick him up in the second round. He's a guy that can lead a defense, and can knock the **** out of some people.
