OT: Raptors board setup

There needs to be:

A news thread pinned at the top of the forum for people to organize all of the news articles. it'll make it easier to get the latest news and rumors. delete all posts in this thread that don't have a link to a news article, rumor, whatever.

A chat room setup for gametime chat.

A thread pinned at the top whenever there is a major announcement and delete all threads that are related for a day. alot of large forums do it for a reason.

A game thread pinned at the top, maybe get someone who already does it to do it, but pin it.

I think it would be a good idea to have a Chat room setup for gametime.

I am not a toronto fan but i think that is pretty good idea...(just expressing my opinion)..

And this board is really active so why not...

no a chat room mo76, we already have threads, but a chat room is live so there is no need for refreshing.

This gives no chance for people to comment on those news articles, though. Part of posting news articles is presenting them to be analysed by the readers of the board. I know you don't like multiple threads on one topic, but lines of discussion are what this board is all about. Having all the news in a straight line would effectively eliminate the opportunity for reaction, which is a big part of what this site is for.

The site does have a ConferenceRoom IRC-style server already. If more people used that, it might serve said purpose. Someone could set up a #BBBNet-Raptors room.

However, our game threads already act as a forum for pre-game, game, and post-game commentary and analysis. I don't see why both couldn't coexist.

I do have some concern that the chat would take good discussions away from the board itself. There is a reason that this site is forums and not chat rooms.

Again, going along with your desire to consolidate similar areas of discussion. The problem is that not all related threads are identical. For example, "Is Jalen Rose a Lockerroom Cancer" and "What Position Will Jalen Play" are two distinct threads stemming from one area of news/discussion. It also causes some problems because it is up to a moderator (in this case Sky, Charlz, or myself) to decide which threads are different enough to warrant their own thread. This undoubtably would draw the ire of some posters, especially if the moderators themselves are the ones creating some of the threads in question.

The bigger boards sometimes use the assimilation method, but they also suffer from it. It is much more difficult to maintain a cohesive debate when the thread stretches-out over dozens of pages. I really don't see any difference between one large thread with multiple lines of discussion versus a few smaller threads with distinct purpose.

This is an idea that has been kicked-around on this board for a little while.

Basically, those against it feel that game threads are already very active and therefore are bumped to the top anyways. Another problem is that posters tend to ignore pinned threads for whatever reason. For example, if you were to post a news article as a new thread you might get two-hundred views. If you post it as a sticky, you might only get half that. This is an anomaly that is difficult to explain.

Usually, the only game-threads that sink are those posted too early.

Those for it think it makes it more official looking. There isn't really any other purpose beyond that, for the aformentioned reasons.

This is just my reaction to these suggestions, not God's word. It is up to all of the moderators of this board (and possibly some outside influences, especially in the case of the chat room) to make organizational decisions such as these. Overall I'm glad people want to make suggestions to improve the quality of the board.

that's my reaction too.

if you wanna complain bout how the board should be, then by all means, ask to become an admin and help create the site to your vision, but if you're not capable of doing such a task, stop complaining and stick to what it is now.

if you dont like it, by all means move along.

I disagree with these posts. Rawker's suggestions may stem from things he doesn't like about the board, or board management, but suggestions such as his are beneficial.

actually this will remove all of the posts like "great", "this is so sweet", etc because no one can post in the news thread. however discussions will be easily had by starting a new thread. but the point is to have a news thread pinned at the top, it's easier for new people and if people visit say every day then they know where to look first for their raps news. it's like getting up in the morning and pulling out the sports section to read first from the newspaper.

gametime chat isn't about posting thoughts, etc, it's about enjoying the game with other raptors fans and being able to react to the game. there is nothing like say someone posting "BOOOYAAA IN YOUR FACE" or some other reaction but then by the time it's posted and see there are already another 4 replys. IRC is a fine service but software is required i think so a java chat would be so much easier, i'm sure it can be setup easily and if a mod doesn't do it i'm sure someone else will.

lock them all, it's simple, contain the histeria for one day inorder to preserve the forums quality. those 2 examples you gave are questions that can be asked in the trade thread, i don't know how you can't see how they are directly related.

people look past the pinned threads in most forums because most forums pin crap threads that no one reads or that are common sense. just take a look at this forum, raps board HOF? Hellbot's player of the game? Doug Smith interview questions? Community Thread? look at page five, enough is said there.

HOF is pointless. hellbot's idea is fine idea but a poll setup after every game (followed by someone posting the result in a pinned thread) so everyone can vote for POTG makes more sense then his opinion. Doug Smith? Dood get chuck, or jack, they are that hard to get ahold of.

Truebluefan works very hard to get people to do these Q&A sessions. I'm guessing this is not something you've tried to do before; it is not easy to get someone well known to do this sort of thing.
