kirk_2003 I dont know why, but i live in TORONTO but i do not the the leafs. in FACT i HATE them. I like all the other Toronto teams like RAPS, JAYS, ARGOS, and the ROCK.

No one gives a crap about the Rock, Argos and Jays.
Maybe the city will when the Argos get a outdoor stadium and when Skydome looks more like a baseball utility.
Thier are worse teams than the Jays that get better attendence for one simple reason thier parks are attractitive:
Pirates
Reds
Padres
Rockies
havent got figures but I am sure thier attendence must be better thsn the Jays.

Hockey by nature is an elitist sport. Much like golf, it is very difficult to afford unless you come from at least a middle class family. This is why relatively few play it and why relatively few grow to like it as fans. Usually people are fans of the sports they played in their youth. Add to it that hockey is a cold weather sport and you preclude even more people from participating.
This is why on a world level, Soccer (football) and Basketball are the most popular sports. All you need is a ball and a goal.

Ture but you can play pickup hockey with minimal equipment, its just really dangerous!! The used to flood the tennis court at the local public school, and even had boards up - made for some sweet hocket playing. I never played organized hockey though.
Our highschools (in Brantford where I grew up) didn't have hockey as a school team, which limits its appeal to some extent.
Poor kids can play football, cause the school picks up the expensive equipment, but hockey for some reason is different.

I never played a single second of organized hockey growing up, but I played road hockey every day after school from about the ages of 10 to 16. All it cost me was the price of a stick and every now and then a package of tennis balls. It cost me far less than my basketball net did.

I used to love playing ball hockey back in the early 90's.
We had our school tennis court as our rink, we had one side the fences as boards and we just had the tennis rack poles as the other side out of play.
I was great at ball hockey but was a terrible skater if I learned how to skate properly I could have played in leauges but oh well the past is history.
