Unhappy 2002 Behind the Draft GRUNWALD blunders (Joe Johnson, Tayshaun Prince)

Just watching Raptors tv and they are doing their behind the draft series.

Grunwald Quotes:
<b>"... I like Jeffries not Prince..."</b>

Phoenix offered Joe Johnson for the 20th pick - Glen nixed it because <b> "... I like the laker deal better"</b>

(Laker deal) = Tracey Murray+Kareem Rush for Jeffries and Lindsey Hunter.

it's very interesting how the 2nd 1/2 of the draft was strong with names like Prince, Kristich, Juan Dixon, Qyntel Woods. all going after 16.

Top 10 had let downs

Dajuan Wagner #6

anyhow hind sight is 20/20 but there are 2 important lessons to learn.
1. Trading a pick is sometimes a very good thing to do because there are so many can't miss guys out there that flop.
2. Late picks (after 20) can be just as good in this day and age of international players.

A perfect example of why grundwald is not a GM at the moment, he did'nt know how to evaluate talent outside the top 10.

Might want to re-consider the late picks you referenced

Dixon is a one dimensional and overall a below average player, who is a ball hog.

Qyntel Woods is a headcase and criminal amongst other things.

Re: 2002 Behind the Draft GRUNWALD blunders (Joe Johnson, Tayshaun Prince)

Joe Johnson was an underachiever for his first few years. The Celts drafted him and gave up on him, and now you see the Suns were willing to ship him out for just a draft pick. What does that tell you about how ALL nba people valued him at the time. Was Grunwald supposed to have a crystal ball?

Tayshaun Prince has found a great fit in Detroit. Plays a certain role there within a great team system. The Laker trade filled 2 needs. It got us a veteran backup PG in Hunter who has certainly proven what he can do in Detroit (and who Lenny loved), plus it gave us an athletic wing man who was supposed to be a lock down defender and shooter. The one scout really loved Jeffries and knew him from when he was younger. Hard to say if it was the injury that ruined Jeffries, or his pot-head personality.

Kristich was the true sleeper and he took 2 years to bring any value.

Hard to slam Glen with the top 6 busts you mention and all the people who gave up on Joe Johnson.
