Toronto Star/Hartford Courant: Raptors made the right move with top pick

Quote:
Villanueva allowed me to watch his workout regimen in New York. We spent the day together and it was incredible. Brad Ceisler is a no-nonsense guy and Villanueva knew it because Gordon told him. You see, Ceisler also worked out Gordon, who was projected as a middle first round pick but blew NBA people away with his workouts (and there were knocks on him, too about his work ethic). Look what happened to Gordon.

That's the way Villanueva saw it. He had exceptional workouts and from every NBA type I spoke with his work ethic was hardly an issue. The Lakers loved him as a person and player and would have taken him at No.10, for sure. The Knicks probably would have taken him at No.8.

The Raptors made the right move because Villanueva is now where he wants to be and is destined to show people the kind of player he is, one with loads of talent and a future Raptors fans are going to hope includes their first pick of the '05 draft....
Easily the most positive article I've seen written on Charlie; obviously not written by somebody affiliated with the city of Toronto's media.

Good article. Wow what a late growth spurt he had. He literally transformed from a guard to a big man. I'm very excited about seeing him play for us this season.

Yea same thing happened to Bosh and Lamar Odom. Hence odoms crazy handles but this is quite common among co-ordinated big men

Therein lies the problem in some measure - uninformed mass public who look at sporting events as they would goin' to a movie or walkin' in the park - it's easy to start condemnin' if one's unschooled/ill-informed; unfortunately, there's not much you can do to inspire others to glean knowledge, thereby makin' them wiser fans (and/or people) overall... If either and/or both get off to slow starts, so be it - I suspect that Babcock et al have developed some pretty thick/calloused skinned armor by now that'll just teflon these potential criticisms (and will advise Graham/Villaneuva to do the same)...

That is an important point to remember. Anyone who says they know for sure that Villanueva is going to be a horrible pro, or a great pro, is lying, quite frankly. It's impossible to know.

Good article. People always talk about his stats(not bad, by the way), but they don't take into account that he plays with a bunch of NBA prospects. Rudy Gay(Top 3), Josh Boone(top 5), Marcus Williams(First Round), Hilton Armstrong, Denham Brown, Rashad Anderson...UConn is stacked.

Re: Toronto Star/Hartford Courant: Raptors made the right move with top pick

Joey Graham also played SG in his high school days. I think his ballhandling abilities were almost hidden in his post play at Oklahoma State.

But that was a great article. The guy who wrote it was on the Swirsk (now renamed the "Smith") show, and was on there praising Charlie some more.
