Lightbulb Trade(s)/Buyouts/ Movement looming - notice the signs.

I am certain that <b>Babcock</b> is on the verge of doing something or is trying very hard to do so.

What are the signs?
1. Did not sign 1st round draft players to contracts - which of course leaves flexibility if one or (god forbid) both were dealt.
2. <b>Bonner</b> and <b>Sow</b> remain unsigned - not good since the Raps want to keep favor with them and <b>Sam Mitchell</b> would like them in summer league to expedite their development - they can not play for the Raps in summer league with out a contract.

<i>NOTE: Sow will is still planning on playing for his country Senegal who has entered a team in the LA league.</i>

<b>What does it all mean?
=================</b>
IMHO *speculation*
1. Babcock likely wants to get a bonafied big man perhaps Magloire and it would take one of the first round picks + 2 cap ballancers (either williams' + Mo Pete). There may in fact already be a deal in place but it involves Mo
Pete and it can not be announced until the year is up. (Portald Ratliff or Magloire... who knows)

2. <b>Pape Sow</b> and his agent know the best way to drive up his price is to kick a55 in the summer league then some team will make an offer and take him or the Raps will have to think long and hard about paying a little more for him.

In a sense <b>BABCOCK WOULD RATHER THE GUYS NOT PLAY IN SUMMER LEAGUE because it will up their value if they both show well</b>. However Atlantic rival teams like <b>Boston</b> (for example) sensing that the Raptors are on the verge of being a very talented young team would like to keep the Raptors burden with a hefty pay roll and could make a high offer to Bonner (A Boston Native) and force the Raps to match possible using up more of the MLE than they want to on one player.

If Boston were to do this though it would be a <b>big gamble</b> because while <b>Bonner</b> is loved in Toronto there is no guarentee the Raps would match after drafting (<b>CV3</b> and <b>Uros Slokar</b> <- who happens to be very good jumper shooter/rebounder/hustler in his own right). And if they do match they could just use the 15 day period to work out a sign and trade with Bonner to another team (i.e. Chicago who has been making noise about reaquiring their 2nd round pick).

<b>Summary</b> - Babcock has 2 strong pieces of ideology on his agenda - get young talent on the rise and don't over pay for it so that there is cap flexability.

I predict that these 6 guys are gone for sure by the time camp starts in Oct... and it will start very soon.

Re: Trade(s)/Buyouts/ Movement looming - notice the signs.

Hopefully whatever Babcock does, he can get it all sorted it out as soon as possible. I want to see these guys play together, and get used to one another. I wouldn't mind trading Eric Williams, Lamond Murray and a 1st for Magloire, but I doubt they'd do it. New Orleans would probably want Mo Pete instead of Eric Williams, and I guess I would do that trade as well, but I'd have to think long and hard about it.

After that, to cut down on our roster further, I would simply release Aaron Williams, and of course not re-sign Donyell or Milt.
I would be shocked if Pape Sow and Matt Bonner aren't on this team come October. They are both young, and have showed a lot of good things in their first year in the league.

Hopefully Babcock can get something done sooner than later.

Re: Trade(s)/Buyouts/ Movement looming - notice the signs.

The star and the sun reported not only that there's a 50-50 chance that Bonner, Sow and Ukic will/will-not be in the summer league ... they also say that it is expected that we are going to sign our first rounders CV and JG by the end of today.

So any speculation will probably not include CV or JG ... any trade for Magloire will not include this year's firsts. I never thought about including Bonner and Sow in a deal to New Orleans for Magloire, but it could happen (as you mentioned).

But if they have to be signed before they play in the summer league, then who cares if they drive up their value once the Raptors have them under contract? Once they're signed they can't be traded for a year anyway, and their future trade value will be determined by their regular season performance, not the summer league.

Excellent analysis.

I have thought since draft day that the Magloire deal was going to be announced as soon as MoPete's contract reaches its first birthday.

I agree that Slokar is a very similar player to Bonner, skill-wise. Does he have the confidence that makes Bonner so effective?

As much as everyone loves Bonner, it might actually better to let him go, and use the whole MLE on one quality free agent. We have too much depth, and not enough front line talent.

Mopete's contract birthday is July 30th ... that's a long way to go. I don't think Babcock and New Orleans' GM has an agreement this far ahead.

Re: Trade(s)/Buyouts/ Movement looming - notice the signs.

we have to wait for the setting of the exceptions.

unless woods is trouble in the lockerroom, we should keep him. he had great moments. he's a good, cheap, +7ft 3rd string centre.

losing marshall and bonner in the same season is a big blow.

bosh, charlie, hoffa, woods, sow. and aaron who'll be gone if possible.

5 men over the post positions can get all of them burn and game legs.

it would be good to have bonner back. teams need guys like him. he's good and can get better. we should give him a 2 + 2 contract.

in two years we have bosh, hoffa, charlie, joey, ukic (probably), 1st rounder, 1st rounder, and maybe one more 1st rounder. potentially 2nd rounder(s) making the team. an option to keep bonner. maybe rafer. and mo's bird rights.

we have two years to find a way to fit our guys together or move pieces to try to if they don't. that's when we need to be winning or showing that the foundation's there and we're headed in the right direction.

Re: Trade(s)/Buyouts/ Movement looming - notice the signs.

As much as I like Bonner it would be a smart move on Babcock's part to involve him in any Magloire trade with out giving up any of our draft picks. A trade of Bonner, Sow, and Mo-pete.. I can live with (still think its too much) but we would lack in the guard position desperately.

Any trade invloing any of this years picks or next years picks would be a bad trade for the Raptors... IMO.

Yes me too - however when babs was asked on draft night if any of these picks were for trades he seemed very convincing that they were drafted to be raptors - although this could be posturing.

<b>Bonner</b> would be sorely missed in Rap land I think they would do anything in their power to ensure he is a Raptor by Autumn.... however <b>Jamaal</b> would be possibly the one player in the league (next to <b>Steve Nash</b>) who could be more popular and with Sow/CV3/Hoffa/Bosh/Bonner/Williams all looking for minutes at the 4/5 spot - <b>Bonner could be the casualty since he has likley realized his potential</b> given his age and experience... may also be most coveted big outside of Bosh needed to bring a Magloire, Nene, or whoever to Toronto.

remember when we were thinking we should just let mo walk with his pricetag? now we have a player that contributes and other teams want.

Re: Trade(s)/Buyouts/ Movement looming - notice the signs.

The first round picks have been signed.

Ukic just has to get his buyout issue resolved.

And I don't think the Raps CAN sign Bonner or Sow until July 22nd because that is the new FA signing date. Babs always states that Bonner is a priority.

So I don't read anything into this at all. I think Babs has the guys he wants. Only minor moves from here.

so you essentially believe that Mags will not be a Rap... well this summer atleast. Well if N.O. is trying to play hard ball with the Raps that may in fact be the case... their GM sitaution is likely worse than what Rap fans have endured - look at what they gave up Baron Davis for.
