Now that Simmons is a Buck
Simmons going to the Bucks makes the Clippers terrible again. They are going to be lottery for sure and probably at in the bottom 5 teams in the league.
It just so happens that NJ has unprotected rights to the Clippers 2006 first round draft pick. How much better would the VC trade have been if Babcock had secured the LA pick instead of the Denver pick.

I'm thinking it wasn't an option.

Something to consider.
Maybe we were offered Philly or LA, not both, plus Denver.
The Clippers pick would likely be better than the Philly one (who knew Webber would get traded and Iverson would play like the MVP again, though?), but it would be a year later.
Maybe our management thought it better to get two picks for the next two summers, rather than wait and get three picks the next year.
It's probably better to get somebody to put beside Bosh and the rest of the guys now so that they can mature and develop chemistry, but it's a dangerous gamble, considering how high that Clippers pick can potentially be.
If somebody said, "you can have a million dollars now, or a million and a quarter a year from now," I bet a lot of people would take the money right away. Whether that's good managerial skills, we'll see.
Denver could still fail, and the Clippers could still sign someone and overachieve.

More ammunition for the Babcock haters...

Definitly...for him not to get that pick for VINCE CARTER is borderline reprehensible...I don't read this forum extensivly (so it probably has already been said), but do you think Babcock actually thought he got a fair deal for Vince, even before what went down with Zo?

Well he always said it was the best deal available, and from what we know, he was right. Vince Carter was not playing like Vince Carter, so it would be impossible to get Vince Carter talent in return for him. And for the Mourning issue, Babcock always said he was only there to make the contracts work. He would have done the deal even without Mourning involved.

Babcock said that he didn't get a good deal, he said that he got the best deal at the time...i have to believe him, it's not like VC was inspiring everyone in the league at the time?
Personally i think he did the smart thing and gave the team an extra 1/2 year to gel.

Babcock said he didn't get fair value, but he got the best deal available.
And moving Carter was addition by subtraction.

Re: Now that Simmons is a Buck
I wouldn't write off the Clipps so quickly. I don't know what they're going to do but they have a ton of cap space and trade fodder. Livingston's development will be crucial in their success but they've got a solid team, even after letting Simmons walk- who I wouldn't have wanted to overpay either.

Re: Now that Simmons is a Buck
Bucs are loaded
Bogut
Redd
Ford
Mason
Smith
Simmons gives them instant offence a good player to come off the bench

Re: Now that Simmons is a Buck
Given that we had to take back Zo, and their initial offer was 2 picks, I would have tried to play hard ball for the clips pick but it sounded like Babs took what he was offered.
If Kmart is worth 3 picks, is VC and taking back Zo only worth 2. Maybe, but NJ should have given in on the other players (Collins).
I am very happy with the PHI pick though. Very happy.

Re: Now that Simmons is a Buck
am i the only one who thinks eric williams would be good for the clippers? and skip, too. they're exactly the type of team who would see the value of rafer's production to price.

I get the feeling that Babcock doesn't play hardball with anyone or in any situation. He didn't with Vince, he didn't with Zo, he didn't with the Nets, he didn't when Jalen and Rafer were in their little spat (that spilled-over to on-court play), and I wonder if he'll be able to get Ukic this year given his negotiating skills.
