The general public seemingly is unable to piece together that the equation player/former player = preparation to be qualified judge of talent/upper management is a non-sequitur...
You can see Thomas's stats w/ the Pistons speak for themselves (albeit on a very, very good team w/ the likes of Joe Dumars, Vinnie Johnson, Bill Laimbeer, etc.) - however, the fact that he's been able to secure another GM position followin' his less-than-stellar performance in the same role w/ the Toronto franchise begs the question why? His career as a coach also merits scrutiny owin' to subpar numbers... Dumars is the exception to the rule whereas more often than not, promotin' a former player to executive status tends to be suspect - methinks that Dolan fell for Thomas's charm and erred mentally by addin' apples and oranges (playin' career and GM wherewithal) in a personally palatable option...
Thomas's post-playin' career is checkered at best: a hackneyed dilettante as GM is the best he should hope for as his lastin' public image...
