Toronto Sun: Raptors can't join the fun
Quote:
PEOPLE ASSUME big-name NBA free agents don't want to come to Toronto. But really, how could anyone possibly know that?
The Raptors haven't had any salary-cap room -- honest-to-goodness, condition-free salary-cap room -- since the ice age.
NBA teams officially could sign free agents as of yesterday afternoon.
The Raptors will jump into the pool today by signing Spanish point guard Jose Calderon and second-year forward Pape Sow, according to sources.
Now, nothing against Calderon and Sow, but we don't expect a spike in season-ticket sales. Calderon is an unproven rookie who will be very fortunate if he provides as much as Milt Palacio did. Sow is a nice kid, but he remains a raw project.
It certainly would be a unique experience if the Raptors ever had enough cap room to take a reasonable shot at the biggest fish in the free-agent pond. But when is that going to happen? In two years, when Jalen Rose's massive contract comes off the books? Or maybe never?...

Re: Toronto Sun: Raptors can't join the fun
If Bosh's salary doesn't count against the cap for the max amount, we'll be major players come 2007. if he's extended before the offseason, we won't have much room. that's how i see it anyway.
As for not being players this year, i think it's a great thing. This is not looking like a good time to spend big and "go for it". If we weren't adding 3 or more players for cheap (with 2 more developing in europe) I might be a little bitter but thankfully I don't have to worry about that.
Nets add Mccinnis; we add Calderon. Memphis trades FOR Eddie Jones and loses Stro Swift for nothing after signing the Cardinal to big bucks; Babcock looks to be getting Pape and Bonner for minimal expense.
Our time for free agency will come. The thing I'm wondering is who, or what kind of player will be out there that will complete our team when we're going to add two more solid rookies (fingers crossed) next year and bring in Ukic? Magloire? Not if unless he can take a pay cut as I really think Hoffa will be better than him come 2007 (again, fingers crossed). Desmond Mason is an option but don't think we'll probably grab a top wing player in the draft next year (my money's on Adam Morrison)?

I haven't seen Morrison play much @ Gonzaga save for some NC2A games, reminds me of a slightly taller, lankier version of Luke Jackson in my limited viewin' although some have chimed in declared him to be cut from the Larry Bird mold... Any more enlightened opinions to offer?
And BB - my bad re: your avatar - should've confirmed w/ you before goin' ahead w/ an assumption...

adam morrison? he really doesn't impress me... at all.
he really doesn't. i know he's sitting at the top of the ladder on the online mocks but how many have actually seen him play? i don't see this man as a star in the nba- in fact, i'd be more than just shocked... i'd be something else.
i guess we'll have to see what happens.

I haven't seen **** all from any of the prospects out there. I'm just looking for a top notch wing player that will fit with our team. Morrison is an intriguing talent from what I've heard, that's all. I'm not high on the guy but i'm not really high on anyone apart from Gay.

I don't think he'll be a star personally, but the Mike Dunleavy comparisons are definetly off. I don't have a legit comparison, but I can tell anyone that hasn't seen him play; he can flat out score.
I'd rather get a defensive minded, athletic SG ala Rodney Carney, but we just need talent.

Get high on this Rudy, of the Fernandez kind.

Re: Toronto Sun: Raptors can't join the fun
listen, i don't mind those who like morrison. i mean, i don't have a crystal ball myself. but from the ~ half dozen or so gonzaga games i caught last season, he hardly looked like a lottery talent- although considering the lottery picks of the last few years, he didn't look much worse than any of them... and he's still in college.
still, he doesn't interest me, but i don't want to yell out an anti-adam point of view either. i'm really not. it's just that he's not larry bird- that stuff kind of depresses me, while it's also kind of funny. i mean, he might fit the bird body profile (as well as several other superficial traits) but bird didn't become bird (imo) because of anything that you could see. rather, i think larry became larry because of the unquestionable talents relaxing between his ears.
"6'9'' white small forward who plays an impressive perimeter game- larry!" it's just not that simple (imo). morrison might still become a star in the ncaa, i don't know, but i always found ronny turiaf more electric for gonzaga, and more of an exciting pro prospect. like i said, we'll see what happens, but i advise everyone to not take adam's standing online right now as an accurate reflection of his talent- it's not that simple either.
but y'all know that already. you ain't stupid.
(and good luck to adam. prove me wrong, kid.)
peace

Re: Toronto Sun: Raptors can't join the fun
Move Eric and Aaron Williams for Slava Medvedenko and Devean George
both are younger players, and Eric/Aaron wants out; Slava has a big body, and George can nab more minutes in this team... It can be thrilling for them!
Also, move Lamond Murray to Houston for Weatherspoon. He can help this team more than Lamond. Lamond can help Houston in garbage minutes too.
Also, try to sign someone like Dajuan Wagner, which can play both guard positions. He can be good as a backup and flourish in TO.
