Toronto Raptors, Chris Bosh underrated?
Many Raptors fans would agree that Chris Bosh is underrated, but is it
because he plays for a Canadian team? The answer to that question is
probably yes. Players such as Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets
and Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat are two particular players who are
overrated. Not to take anything away from what Dwayne Wade has done
this season, would he be getting all the attention if he was playing for the
Toronto Raptors? The answer to that question is no. Simply put, the NBA
has to care for its American markets first. However we should not forget
about former Raptor, Vince Carter who is now a New Jersey Net. Carter
put the Raptors on the map. He made the team known around the league
simply because he was amazing and he made highlight reel plays each
night. 1998,1999,2000 and 2001 the Toronto Raptors were recognized
around the league.
Over recent years Vince Carter made the team
a laughing stock. The 2002-2003, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 season
have been very bad and embarrassing for fans. The team has had three
coaches in 3 seasons and a new general manager for the 2004-2005
season. Chris Bosh is the future for the Toronto Raptors, but he would
be more popular in America. This is in many ways unfair for Canadians.
Canada has a total population of around 32 million people. Some
NBA cities have more people than all of Canada, but Canada should get
equal attention for obvious reasons. Toronto has a potential 30 million fans.
We know that isn’t very likely but 20 million potential fans/viewers is a large
number. The Air Canada Centre (Home of the Toronto Raptors) ranked in the
top 10 in attendance (2003-2004).
It can be easily proven that the NBA has a lack of interest for the Canadian market.
In April of 2005 the Toronto Raptors Seta few NBA Records and
Raptor Donyell Marshall set a record himself with the most 3 pointers in a game.
You would think that the NBA would have a cover story of this on there website.
Instead on nba.com they had a story of Boston Celtic Ricky Davis and a small box
saying Raptors set NBA records. Imagine the media coverage if that had been
an American team?
Chris Bosh: The Future of the Toronto Raptors
During the 2005 All star weekend, the Rookie Sophomore game was played in
Denver, Colorado. A game which features the games best rookies and second
year players. Chris Bosh who is in his second year in the NBA. Chris Bosh
had an amazing game and many people thought that he would be MVP.
Denver Nuggets, Carmelo Anthony was award MVP. Carmelo did have more
points than Bosh, but Bosh played a better game in the eyes of many people.
Was Carmelo awarded MVP because he was the hometown favourite? Its
pretty clear that it was for that reason. He is American, hometown favourite,
and it would look better in America if someone from an American city won
the award. Carmelo Anthony is highly overrated, he had a terrible year
compared to his rookie year in 2003-2004.
Chris Bosh is a great young player with the potential to have a great NBA
career, yet he may not get all the credit that he deserves.
