The red rocket has looked so bad for a long time - I have been defending him on these boards but dang.
seems like everyone is getting better while he is getting worse - what is wrong with MAtt - this is beyond a slump???

Re: Bonner in a brutal funk
^ I think the team putting pressure on him to dribble and drive has muddied the waters for him. When he focuses on his spot up he is great. When he tries to do too much he gets unselfish and erratic.
His rebounding is still helpful, though. He seems to get tough offensive rebounds every night. Had a good block in the Charlotte game, too. The hustle remains. |

This time last year he was #1 in FGP. his total for the season was 533. this year 438 so far. had it been the Bonner of old I think those two over time losses would have been wins (Clippers Spurs)

Re: Bonner in a brutal funk
Since the season started Matt has tried to do things that he isn't capable of and it has severely hurt the one thing he was good at.
If Matt Bonner isn't hitting those open shots, then the Raptors are at a disadvantage every second he is on the court. One of Babcocks best moves IMO was not overpaying this guy, he's bearly worth what we paid for him.

Bonner needs to stop trying to do so much and just focus on what he can do. His dribbling scares me just a little. And when he's on defence, he needs to stop trying to do everything because when he goes over to help, he's leaving someone unattended and when the ball is swung back to that unattended guy, Bonner's not quick enough to run back and get a hand up. |

Re: Bonner in a brutal funk
you know what, i don't think i'm alone, but i have no worries at all about matt. i think the slump he's in can be attributed to his youth. he's unsure of his shot right now, he's sort of playing his way through it, but he'll obviously come out the other end at some point.
long-term, i think a player like matt will have fewer slumps than the rest. i think he'll become relatively consistent rather quickly. it just takes some experience, some punishment in the early stages of his career. but for him i don't think it'll take as long, don't think it'll take as many ups and downs as, say, charlie villanueva, or especially jose calderon. i don't worry about bonner. he's just riding the professional learning curve. give him another year. peace |

Re: Bonner in a brutal funk
Jose has hit the wall.
I think the Raps need to realize that Bonner is a taller less athletic (if thats possible) Donyell Marshall. We need to give up trying to make him into something he ain't. Park him on the 3-pt line and let him do what he does best. With the addition of AD his minutes should go back to the 3 and 4.

Re: Bonner in a brutal funk
I agree with Benis007, although I think Bonner clearly tries harder on defense than Marshall does. Park him at the 3 point line and force the defense to extend itself to deal with him or let him bury them with 3s (still shooting roughly 40% from the 3 point line). Don't pass him the ball unless he's wide open or you just want to re-post or something like that.

Re: Bonner in a brutal funk
What is going on with bonner, he had 3 to 5 open looks and instead of shooting the ball he dribbled or pass the ball back..couple of times mitchell and calderon had to remind him to shoot the ball when he is open
