Picking up would-be first rounders with cap space

Last year's draft was deep. Very deep. It featured one of the best second rounds of all time IMO. A lot of them would be going in the first round this year. Of course a lot of those guys haven't got to showcase yet because they're second round rookies and the league is also very, very deep. Still, a lot of these guys probably only got signed to one year deals and can walk away from their current team as unrestricted free agents. We've got the cash; who wants it?

This is a thread to discuss who we should look at. Who of these kids are actually free agents? Who else is a free agent that can be had for a reasonable price?

Some names to look at: these guys were second rounders or undrafted or have other issues

Monta Ellis- he might be number one on my list. think the Warriors locked him up for more than a year?

Amir Johnson- high schooler with the Pistons. freak athlete. position?

Jackie Butler- center right out of high school. getting some time with LB

Chris Taft - was this guy waived or is he still with the Warriors?

Stephen Graham - may want to bring him aboard if he shows offseason progress.

Martynas Andriuskivicious - I think they would have signed him for more than a year but who knows.

Travis Diener - cheap little PG.

Andray Blatche - again i'd assume they signed him for more than one year? probably doesn't fit with our team.

DJ Mbenga- cheap big man

Maciej Lampe- FA? BC would know him from the Suns.

Jay Williams- we know all about his "issues"; comeback still possible.

Antonio Burks - here's another interesting little PG.

Jackson Vroman- Jeff Fosteresque?

Elson and demarr johnson free agents? somehow i don't think so. (sorry, I'm working with hoopshype here).

Marcus Banks- unrestricted. we should be looking at him. not a great point guard but he has some damn good physical attributes. not 25 years old till november. speed and defense.

James Singeton and Ron Dupree- athletes

Dan Ewing-

Qyntel Woods- would like to grab him if we don't go wing in the draft

Anyone have correct info on these guys? Anyone actually interested in filling out our roster with any of them?

Ellis and Singleton are still under contract for one more season, two in Ellis' case.

Of the rest of the players you listed I would happily invite Banks, Mbenga, and "bad touch" Elson to camp.

Andriuskevicious is an interesting prospect but he is a long-term one. Better than Slokar? Who knows. He's under contract anyways.

The Raptors don't need anymore young projects. They should bring in vets to teach the current youngsters how to play and how to succeed in the NBA. That would make me happy.

What I would like to know is what Colangelo is planning for the Raptors long-term??

Is he going to start rebuilding immediately ... or is he going to shake out the team and let it bottom out another year or two???

It's nice to fantacize like make-believe GMs .... but what is Colangelo's philosophy about a team for the future .... another Phoenix ....???!!!!
