Swirsky Show: Colangelo on Ukic, Bargnani, etc.
Re: the Swirsky Show.
- Colangelo was in Europe scouting.
- Had a look at Bargnani, considers him a top-5 pick.
- Talked to the Treviso GM (the guy rumoured to be joining BC's staff).
- Saw Ukic and said he doesn't think Roko's situation is ideal and wants to get him to Toronto ASAP.
- Tried to get Roko to Toronto this year but money/buy-out issues prevented it.
- Roko has a $1.5M buyout, $500k of which we can foot, the rest Roko would have to handle.
- Is very high on our young core, went so far as to say we have one of if not the brightest future in the NBA.
- Just say no to Bonzi Wells (no long term contracts for players with history of issues).

Smartest thing he said. I'm sure someone will give Wells a huge deal and I'm glad to hear it won't be Toronto.
Sounds like he has a definite plan, in terms where he wants to go. I'm very curious to see him carry it out (and hoping for the best).

What's Bargnani's contract situation? I don't want him in the first place, but the absolute worst case scenario for this year's draft is the Raps getting cheated Fran Vazquez-style with Bargnani.

Really good to hear, how much can / will the Raps sign Roko for?

much as they want, i think (obviously within the maximum) - since he's a second rounder.

The buyout amount is a one-shot deal, so if Roko signs a deal comparable to what Calderon signed, we'd be looking at 3 years/$7M or so. If had to cover his buyout remainder he'd still be making lots of money. Whatever the contract is it will likely be a huge bargain.

Issues aside
Bonzi picked a perfect time to just destroy the NBA's premier defender, and he is going to get paid well this summer.

Thanks Speedy.
Awesome news is that BC actively tried to get Roko over here toward the end of the season but there was not enough left from the MLE to do it. And that he thinks Roko needs a change of scenery and that Toronto is that change. I would say a solid 90% chance of Roko on the team next year.
Great news avoiding arses like Bonzi.
Gut tells me he absulutely takes BPA, even if that is a PF. You can always trade from strength. No Shelden for me.

hhmm hiring the gm of the team that bargani plays for... does this pretty much solidify that bargani is number one on raptors draft board?

If he is, there are two probablescenarios:
1. We have trade plans for at least 2 of Bonner, Sow, CV, Bosh, Hoffa, and EWill.
2. Bargnani is going to be trade bait for someone who has time to groom a high-risk high-reward project (not us).
3. Bargani's convinced BC that he can play center.
4. BC has lost his freaking mind.

Re: Swirsky Show: Colangelo on Ukic, Bargnani, etc.
From most accounts Bargnani isn't ready for the NBA and might stay in Europe another season after being drafted--teams looking at him have to take that into account.
When you think about Colangelo's latest statements about wanting more "experienced" players it suggests that Bargnani isn't quite what we're looking for, even though he has professional experience.
Could be a smokescreen, though.
I've got no problem whatsoever with Colangelo if he plans on making the Raptors the premier destination for international basketballers. That could work to our advantage over time. Guys are going to look at Oberto in San Antonio, Magic in New Orleans/Oklahoma City, and Jake in Indiana and wonder how hard it is to find the ideal setting.
If we've got guys like Calderon and Ukic praising our environment, combining that with Toronto's already metropolitan appeal and we have an attractive package to offer Euroleague jumpers.

Re: Swirsky Show: Colangelo on Ukic, Bargnani, etc.
Don't get your panties in such a bunch about Bargnani. The guy's name was brought up by Chuck in reference to an email or listener question.
The talk about Garbajosa makes more sense in terms of what was said during the FAN interview. He mentioned a few teams about our young 'core' (Bosh, Villi, Joey, ?Jose?) and wanting to get more experience in here. This sounds great to me, if our core is young, we should bring in more experienced players as role/bench players, as opposed to this season where we had almost all young players in the second half (james and mopete being the only experienced players, with James looking more and more like he's not coming back every time Colangelo opens his mouth).
