Last trade of Number 1 Overall

Was in 1993.

Orlando took Chris Webber with # 1 and traded him to G.S. for Penny Hardway (#3) and three additional first round picks.

Webber and Hardaway obviously better than the players in this draft,

but 1 for a 2-6 pick and some

still works.

Other high draft picks trades have included a high level player in return for the draft pick

Brand for Chandler (#3) and Skinner

Shareef Abdur Rahim for Gasol (#3) Lorezen Wright, Brevin Knight

No real point to this post, just throwing out value of other high picks in recent years.

So what do you think Colangelo should do?

Use the #1 pick and draft Bargnani or Aldridge ... OR .... trade away the #1 pick for a lower pick and several players ???

I bet that's what Colangelo is anguishing over .... and hoping to steal Bargnani with a lower draft pick and get some proven talent too.

yeah, that is sort of relevant. i remember the '93 draft very well. as i recall, a lot of fans were intrigued by the prospect of chris and shaq playing together. chris' stock at that time was... a poor man's shaquille o'neal. he was a bona fide #1, i think most teams expected him to be picked there (whether he then got traded was another issue), it's just that the depth of the draft (with all the underclassmen who declared- jamal mashburn, shawn bradley, penny, rodney rogers... lots of 'em) complicated things.

anyway, my point is that most people generally saw orlando in a similar way to how they see toronto today. we have one position up front that is simply stacked. another big body would make it interesting (how do you handle three 7 footers?) but... it might be too different. nobody seems to know how effective it would be. orlando decided to trade out of that position for penny but who knows who got the better end. i wonder if we might do the same thing.

so many options. i'm lovin' it. the next month is bound to be a lot of fun.

peace

I don't think that the top guys are any better than the rest of the top 6. If we can fill a need with a lower pick - ie Roy or M. Williams and throw in a veteran that helps us now I do it.

it is safe to say that there is no consensus star like Webber this year to net us 4 first round picks, or something of that value. I never had realized that trade had happened - Before the Raptors I was a Pistons fan, but didn't follow the draft.
