Toronto Sun: Raps pick wants out of Spain

Quote:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Roko Ukic wants to play for the Raptors next season and, perhaps, vice versa.

The Croatian point guard's agent, Marc Cornstein, met Raptors president/general manager Bryan Colangelo yesterday at NBA pre-draft camp for a preliminary discussion. A second-round pick of the Raptors in 2005, Ukic decided to sign a four-year deal with Tau Ceramica of Spain last summer and currently is involved in Spanish League playoffs.

But the 6-foot-5 Ukic has made it clear to Cornstein that his desire is to play in the NBA next season and the agent is in the process of trying to make that happen.

"Obviously, there will be negotiations involving three parties (meaning a buyout needs to be made) and I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves," Cornstein said yesterday. "But Roko would like to be in Toronto and I think Toronto would like to have him as well."

Colangelo didn't go into any details about the discussion, other than indicating it is a possibility that Ukic will play for the Raptors next season. He also said it is possible Ukic will play for the Raptors in the Las Vegas summer league next month...

Even if summer league is all we get this year it would be great! It would give us all a better lookk at his game...but I would love to see a buy out done, lets get him iver here and start working on his NBA game.

You know what sucks, it's the fact that Toronto already has such good caliber point guards in James and Calderon that this guy would be wasted coming here.

I doubt that TAU would let him play summer league while he is still under contract with them. But Colangelo giving a definitive answer is something new, and it means there are no more questions of whether or not Roko is coming over. The buyout is set in the contract and obviously BC is willing to pony up for our biy Roko.

Ideally, I see Roko as a combo guard in the NBA.

Roko is a PG in the NBA, no question. I seriously think Calderon has a better jumper. Roko has no range.

Roko is longer, but Jose is stronger. I'm not convinced Roko will be effective finishing at the rack either, although he could hardly be worse than Calderon.

Jose shows some nice potential...but James is not the solution to our point guard problems, he was a nice one year fix. I personaly am off of the Mike James bandwagon, it was a fun ride while it lasted, but he is just to crazy for me!

I can see him as a little like Brent Barry, you can run the offence with him, and allow for a smaller guard to play the 2 spot.

Roko would've been the perfect complimentary to James? At this point I rather see Roko over then having James back.

Re: Toronto Sun: Raps pick wants out of Spain

I thought Ukic was the prototypical pass-first PG with good height at 6-5 or 6-6 (or whatever he is). And now he's a combo guard? Of course, I've never seen him play so I don't know at all.

That's definitely good news. Hopefully we can catch some of his play in summer league.

But he is not a shooting guard. He is not a Brent Barry. A smaller Jaric, I would say, but even Jaric has more range on his jumper than Roko.
