I'm not saying that those guys won't be motivated to improve with Ben's mindset added to the team on the court and in the locker room, but it seems like a bandaid.
I think it's possible to be a bad defensive and rebounding team despite having one of the best individual performers. I don't know that our team would suddenly make that next step towards becoming invested in playing defense and rebounding just because Ben is there. Maybe they would, I dunno.
This is why I'm not putting my opinion in stone.

well, 5 years isnt really a "band aid" solution as you say, in five years we should be lookign to add new pieces to the puzzle, and keep our championship run (hopefully) alive, and having Bens salary come off the books would be a huge way to go that direction
personally i think all it takes is one player to turn around the fortunes of a team, ala Lebron James, Vince Carter in 99. So I think having the best defensive player in the league could/would have a similar impact on our defensive end of the court. From what ive seen, Ben is the emotional leader, and defensive leader of teams, and ive seen him more often then not instructing guys on what to do on the defensive end. He would teach/demand Charlie and Chris to play better defense.
