I don't think anybody's envisioning him as a shutdown defender, at least not right away, anyway. He's a decent enough scorer, he's got tremendous hustle, he's a great rebounder, he's a good, but not great, defender. If we'd wanted a shutdown defender specialist, we should have gotten a guy like Corey Belser or Mardy Collins.

Re: Official: Toronto selects PJ Tucker 35th overall

Personally I think there has to be some sort of a deal in the making, especially if Garbajosa (sp?) is going to be signed. I don't see how there will be enough minutes to go around in this lineup. I agree with whoever said that Charlie will probably get 30+ minutes at the 3, and considering that Bargs and Garbajosa might get some as well, that does not leave much room for Joey, hence meaning he'd have to learn to play the 2 and earn his minutes there. Now bring Tucker and Ukic into that situation and I see absolutely no way how everyone will be happy with the minutes they'll get. Taking that into account I think there has to be another deal....otherwise it would make no sense imo.

I think everyone is overestimating how big a contribution our rookies and even sophmores are going to make. Historically, most rookies make very little contribution. Also, I'm still skeptical that Ukic is going to be a regular contributor, short of rumours before he was drafted, I've seen very little evidence that he's an NBA-calibre player.

Thanks for the link, reading the A&M story shifted my view quite a bit. Tough MF.

Great pick by the Raptors. We need a player like this, who is tough and can really rebound. In his Junior year as a Longhorn, he averaged 9.5 rebounds, that's a great stat for a guy his size (6'5")...He and Joey G will probably be competing for PT come training camp.

Re: Official: Toronto selects PJ Tucker 35th overall

Well, he's 225 pounds of solid muscle, and has a mean streak I haven't really seen in Joey Graham.

He scored as well as Graham did in college, and rebounded, passed better, with more steals.

He has a 7 foot wingspan. He rebounds. I am not convinced you can teach rebounding. Sure you can teach techniques, which can help alot. But this guy REBOUNDS. Shots that don't go in end up in his hands. HE OUTREBOUNDED LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE.

I believe we are talking about a Bonzi Wells / Ruben Patterson type. A steal at #35.

Of note - 14 double-doubles last season. In his last 13 games, he scored in double figures in every game AND had 4 or more assists 8 times.

He slipped because he doesn't fit the mold. The guy is a player.

Wow, I just checked out his stats. Very impressive.

On the same team:
Aldridge 15.0 ppg, 9.2 rbg, 0.5 apg
Tucker 16.1 ppg, 9.5 rbg, 2.7 apg

mardy collins wasn't available at our pick. and i don't kno enough about corey belser to comment about him. but supposedly bobby jones is a lock down defender as well.. they don't always pan out 2 be.

I said "like" Mardy Collins or Corey Belser. Those were just two names off the top of my head who came closest to fitting into the lock down defender category, which PJ Tucker doesn't (at least, not now, anyway).
