Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
Thing is, by this time all these guys will be eligable for a higher max deal than they would if they simply locked in. Raps would still be the only one's with the right to pay him 30% of the cap as opposed to 25% now.
Smart decision, until you blow out a knee or two.

Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
If anything this actually reduces the risk for the teams than the players. The list of Max players not earning their keep is pretty long. Carter anyone? This will actually force the players to mantain their level of play and guards against injury.
I have no problems with Bosh signing a shorter contract. Much better than if he signs the max and then demanding a trade three years in.

They'll all be free agents @ the same time again.

just heard it on espnradio and it doesn't suprise me.
hopefully the next couple years in toronto will make him want to sign a longer deal.

Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
I actually don't mind the deal, I think it will work well, although I did think he'd use Carmelo's reasoning and sign the 5/80. Also, if BC can't get us to the Conf. Finals, but have us do well enough to not lose the job, then in 3/4 years, he can reevaluate our position, and change our depth charts.

Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
I think its a bad move for Bosh. He doesn't have anywhere close to the same endorsement money that Lebron and Wade have. Those guys could play for free and still be super-rich.
For Bosh to risk 20 mill in guaranteed money on an injury seems like bad advice.
I like the deal for Toronto though. Much less risk. And if he wanted out in a year or two he would get his wish anyway, no matter what contract he was on. Thats just the way it is.
If the Raps are a solid playoff team he won't want to go anywhere. And this way we get to see if he can really be the man on a winning playoff club.

I heard that it was 3 yrs plus a player option for the 4th year... you just know this is going to come back and bite one of these guys.

Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
i don't think this decision has, well, anything to do with money. i certainly don't think it's the motivating factor. when you're talking a guaranteed ~62 instead of a guaranteed ~80, really... you can fill in the blank.
not that we wouldn't be focused on winning regardless, but i think this loophole forces us to be careful. we're not locking up jalen rose or allen iverson for 7 (which might as well be forever), for example. so while chris just re-upped, we can already see the end. that'll keep everyone vigilant for the duration, i'd think, and i see that as a good thing.
this also allows chris some more freedom sooner- same thing with the team. i never thought signing a 5-year lease (let alone 6 or 7) anywhere would be a good idea. it's just too long for everyone involved. at this level, it's not about the money- there are simply too many other things that could change in the meantime, and could certainly change how you'd enjoy it all during the best years of your life.
i never thought 'commitment' meant signing your life away. i think this is an excellent move for everyone.
peace

Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
Wade gave 3 years because by the time the contracts done, shaq will likely be gone, and if the heat arent a contendor he will leave. The same goes for CB4, if TO isnt a contendor expect him to go. Same for LeBron.

Agreed.
It is also important to remember that in the last couple years of this contract (Resigning time) the raps will have a number of expiring deals (Rasho, Hump, parker, garbajosa etc). This additional cap room allows for many more changes via FA and trades to keep CB interested.
I have yet to really form an opinion on any of BC's moves to date. How can anyone without seeing the on the court result? But from a financial point of view his deals stink of genius. The flexibility is brilliant and very refreshing.
Some of these signings/trades likely won't work out. But none of them present any long term comitment.
I have a small man crush on BC for his use of cap space, and pre-existing assets. This guy could manage a fortune 500.

i think wade and lebron are trying to team up or something.
whoever has the most cap space in 2011 wins lebron + wade?

Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
Wow, a team says we will give you 80 million guaranteed, and you say no thanks I'll take less
Lebron's deal makes sense, if he is leaving the door open to go to Brooklyn when the nets move there in 2009
But Wade and Bosh's moves are questionable IMO, considering Wade's reckless play and that Bosh may or may not turn out to be that true max. franchise player. Bosh will turn out great but what if teams deem him to be good complementary star but not a true superstar deserving of a max type deal by the time he's 27
look at big men like Keyon Martin, Chris Webber and even Juwan Howard, at one point teams were willing to throw bundles of money at these guys to retain their services, but now????
I understand the calculated strategy in Chris's move, I cross my finger that it will work out for him

Re: Chris going Lebron/Dwyane route?
another thing to think about....
did Bosh sign a shorter deal to maximize his earnings (from 25% of the team salary to 30%) in the future, or did he do it to optimize his choices of places to play in the future.... maybe a combo of both??
