Re: Jorge Garbajosa leads Spain to gold!
Garbajosa had a good game, but please don't get over-hyped. He's a pretty good euro 3pt shooter, but put a couple of feet behind that line and you could see he missed a lot of them short. A decent big man that can hit the open J. He is smart and tough enough to get boards ... that's about it. Not really an athletic guy and did quite a few moving picks. He'll need time to adjust in the NBA.
Having said that, it will be good to get 15 minutes of strong hard-nosed basketball from him. Its always good to have two gold-medalist starters in your bench

Re: Jorge Garbajosa leads Spain to gold!
^ honestly, after watching Nocioni transition smoothly to the NBA with the Bulls and then getting to see him play with Argentina at the WC, I don't see why Garbajosa can't do the same
I think they both posess very similar skill sets and have above average b-ball IQ's, to make up for their average athleticism
I love players that play their best games when it means the most, and Jorge steped up big time in the Gold medal game

With all the high intensity ball this guy's played over the last ten months, I bet Sam doesent' give him big minutes untill after the all star break.

Re: Jorge Garbajosa leads Spain to gold!
I swore I read somewhere that he was a combo foward, granted that he played C at times, I'm 100% sure that he was expected to be a SF/PF more than a PF/C

I tried to find the interview in print. It was on RapsTV when the signing was announced.
But Gherardini specifically said that he didn't have the skill set to play at the SF spot in the NBA. He was being compared to Nocioni, and Gherardini disagreed and said he was a 4/5 not 3/4.
Does nobody else remember this?

Here's a thread where it is being discussed. And speedy, our fearless leader, confirmed this. As well as some of the euro observers.

Re: Jorge Garbajosa leads Spain to gold!
What I saw was an extremely savvy player who maintained outstanding defensive position at all times, and was remarkably quick at anticipating penetration and cutting it off.
In the post he stayed on his feet and used his body to make life difficult for opponents, even when they got an O-board in putback position.
Offensively he was decisive and smart.
We are making to much of categorizations. 3 4 5 mean very little to a BC team. Jorge is a player. He can do a lot of things.
Overall, he will be an upgrade to Matt Bonner, but fill a similar role. He may be able to play double the minutes Bonner did, or maybe just the same. Somewhere in that range.
Noccioni, btw, is a very good athlete.

Re: Jorge Garbajosa leads Spain to gold!
It's a bit tough to predict exactly how he'll fit in with this team. I think we might see him playing alongside Bosh because he is capable of doing the role player thing, getting after loose balls and trying to defend bigger players. He might have trouble with the athleticism of the typical NBA big man, especially at the power forward position, but if he stays tight positionally he'll probably do fine.
I think it's more likely we'll see him playing centre than small forward considering our glut at one position and derth at the other.
