When was the last time a mediocre coach led any team to success in this league? And you mention the team's responsibility is to execute the plays. Well whose job is it to design those plays and the offensive system? Does that fall on the players too?
If professional coaches have little value, why do GMs continually pay great sums to attract coaches who've had success in the past. How could Larry Brown with a team that Rick Carlisle and Flip Saunders couldn't manage to? How did Avery Johnson get the same group of guys who couldn't play defense a year earlier to play defense?
Professional coach an illusion. Please.

Re: Time to Fire Sam
the raptors should give sam till the all-star break. If the team isnt in contention, he should be gone, and let the new coach come in, and have the 40 some games to create a system for the 07/08 season.

I honestly think the last thing the Raps need is more young players, no matter the potential.

Re: Time to Fire Sam
A new coach WILL be coaching this team, it's not a matter of if but when
Sam has been given every opportunity to grow and get better over his 2+ years here, and while the faces have changed, it seems the results have remained constant.... and at the end of the day he will be judged on his performance.
To criticize Sam after 1 game might be a little hasty, and while I am one of his biggest critics, I'd like to see how he does, mid way through the season.....if no improvements are made, Sam gets the axe

Agreed there is no game plan or prep this looks like streetball.
This is supposed to be an offensive team who keeps getting stuck running 1/2 court sets and they have nothing... bloody nothing but 3 pointers.
this team will go nowhere with Mitchell

Re: Time to Fire Sam
Okay, this whole Sam doesn't run plays thing is kind of outrageous. Now I don't go to the practices, I don't have a copy of the playbook, so I can't really tell if that's a valid statement or not. However, from what I've seen the Raptors generally start executing a play, and somewhere along the way, they stop going with it, stand at their positions behind the three point line, and let the point guard or Bosh decide what to do with the ball. Now if that's how the play is written out and if those are Sam's directions to the players, then I'm sure he would have been fired a long, long time ago. Also, if that's how he intended us to play, I'm sure he wouldn't be standing up screaming at the players to execute the plays properly half the game.
So really, if Sam was as dumb as a lot of you make him out to be, he wouldn't be here right now. It's been seven games with this version of the Raptors, and while the coach does take in a good deal of the blame, he's not the one out on the court.

Re: Time to Fire Sam
I'm pretty sure that BC believes that Sam is not the long term coaching solution.
If that is the case I'm pretty sure that he'll pull the trigger when he's decided on a likely candidate and that person is available and willing.

Re: Time to Fire Sam
Rick Adelman managed to not reach the finals during a 4-5 year span when Sacramento had the most talent in the league. The Lakers were not unbeatable - the Kings had them on the ropes a few times but found a way to lose. Therefore, maximizing talent may not be his forte.
Having said that, the Raptors would kill to get to the 3rd round and choke so maybe it's not such a bad idea.
I'd rather wait until the off-season and having Colangelo pick through a bigger pool of candidates.
Is there any chance Mike D'Antoni gets canned if the Suns stay in last place?

If you think BC beleives that then give him crap instead instead of Sam - if BC beleives that Sam is not the man then why the hell did he bring him back. A GM should never leave a coach in a lame duck situation, its not good for the players.
