Do you really think given the above 11ppg is acceptable? IMO it is absolutely brutal. What NBA wing could not score 11ppg in an up-tempo environment, with no defined second option and playing 34 minutes a game???????
Now the game is much more then scoring - so if he does other things really well, its OJ. But can someonw point me to what exaclty FJ does much better then others to "earn" 34 minutes a night?
I don't see it.

Re: OK, Fred Jones can't shoot.
It is definitely an ugly shot but he's shown he can hit it in the past (i think). He's another guy that could really benefit from the shooting coach.
Now, Desmond Mason, there's a guy that can't shoot - you see those free throws?

Last 3 years
Within 2 point range - 43,45,46%
Not that impressive given that he does not take many FGA's, and a higher percentage of his shots should be of the east variety due to this factor.
For 3 - 30,38,34%
OK. Not good, not bad.

Re: OK, Fred Jones can't shoot.
i think it's important to remember that there are highs and lows for every player during every season. the player we see today may not be the same player we see next week or next month- or even tomorrow. there are peaks and valleys, which is why it's especially risky to say things like, "this guy doesn't deserve any court time" or "this guy will hurt the team all year given the way he's playing now". quite frankly, i don't think fred jones will be shooting like this all year. i don't think he'll be playing like this all year. i don't think any of us think he will. i think he's in a funk, and with the support of his team and his coaches (and his fans) he'll come out of it sooner than later.
yes, he's shooting poorly these days. but do we really want to sit him beside slokar and tucker at the end of the bench? i think that would be a mistake. he's sure to come out of it soon, i think. this guy's going through a slump like morris peterson goes through slumps, like joey graham goes through slumps, like mike james went through slumps, like donyell marshall went through slumps- like i'm sure anthony parker and jorge garbajosa go through slumps. i'm just not a big fan of the bandwagon- i'd rather surround our players with a reliable mass of positive energy, and for it to be the one thing on which they can count.
fred jones will come out of this imo, and i know he wants to come out of it even more than we want him to. let's give him a chance. i think he deserves it.
peace

Personally I think his whole career has been one big shooting slump.

its not like jones has proven to be a good scorer or shooter in the NBA thus far. graham brings more things to the table at this point...he can be that sparkplug energy guy of the bench who does a bit of everything....and peterson can play some D and is our best and most consistent shooter..... mo, joey or fred....somebody has to be the odd man out.

listen, i'm not going to argue with you. my point is that the above quote would have been nearly impossible to find (around here and around the raptors) as recently as one month ago. maybe even two weeks ago. things can change in a hurry. joey: bad to good. fred: bad to ____ .

imo, you wouldn't have seen that opinion in many places as recently as last week (when mop was in a shooting slump himself). i think some of us may have simply forgotten that he was in a serious scoring funk before injuring his elbow. i'm not sure. if he continued playing the way he was playing, i think we'd be talking about trading him (actually, that's already been considered) or sticking him to the bench. out of sight, out of mind? maybe. i think that was often vince carter's strategy, to be honest, when things weren't going quite so well.

you could be right, but i've seen more ridiculous things in this league than a 4-man wing rotation on a good team. we'll see.
maybe i'm too supportive of the man but i'll stick to it: i think fred jones deserves a chance.

Re: OK, Fred Jones can't shoot.
I think the problem with Fred Jones is that he's forced to take so many three pointers. With him being our best perimter shooter in the starting line-up, which is neither his fault or acceptable, he has to play bail out man when TJ drives and kicks or Bosh is working down low. If we had a legitmate three point specialist out there next to Fred who's take over shooting duties I think you'd see a more agressive mini-Magette Fred Jones.

Re: OK, Fred Jones can't shoot.
Sam Mitchell - "Freddy, if your open for three...take it, no matter how many times you miss"
Rick Carliyle - "Freddy, if your open for three...pass it or drive to the net, but don't you dare shoot"
one thing that Sam has never been good at IMO, is getting the most out of players, and utilizing there skill set to the teams advantage. Fred Jones should never have the green light to shoot like he has this year, this is just playing to his weakness, and I really don't know how this helps the team.
I'm still holding out hope for Freddy, his play in the preseason was promising. He ran the team well when asked to fill in for the injured Ford, but now there obviously isn't room for him at the point with both Calderone and Ford getting all the PT.
When it comes down to it, we knew we were getting a decent backup SG, he still needs to find his niche on this team, but for the love of God stop shooting 3's.

He is shooting more three's this year, although he has shot enough with Indiana as well. The disparity between his 2 and 3 point attempts is a little concering as well (Not a good trend so far this year given his supposed strengths and weaknesses)
3PA's per 48, 2003 thru 2006
2.8, 4.8, 4.9, 6.7
2Pa's per 48
7.1, 8.8, 9.7, 6.8

I've been disappointed, I thought he would have a better game around the basket. I was to see him drive more, and lay off the long shots.

I think he is thinking too much right now when he i shooting plus there might some mechanical problem with his stroke if you watch his shot there is a hitch on his follow through. Looks like he is pushing it. the shooting guru they hired should help him
shoot til you make and shoot til you miss

Re: OK, Fred Jones can't shoot.
For a former slam dunk champ I think I've seen him dunk maybe two or three times this year. Maybe we should trade him to the Nets and he'll start dunking again. | |
