Chad Ford & Bill Simmons of ESPN fire Sam Mitchell
Quote:
Scott: Halifax, Nova Scotia: Hey Chad, What's your take on Bargnani? Every minute Mitchell gives he seems to take full advantage of them. He needs more minutes.
Chad Ford: Bryan Colangelo was on my podcast a few weeks ago and basically guaranteed that Bargnani was going to start getting more playing time or else. Interestingly, Bargnani immediately starting getting 20 minutes a night, he's been producing and the Raptors are even winning a little. Some might say that Sam Mitchell saved his job by caving into his boss. I say it's the best reason yet to fire him. Not only was he hurting Bargnani's development, but it looks like he wasn't even putting his best team on the floor. As far as I'm concerned, Mitchell should be the first NBA coach fired ... but don't ask me who should replace him ... the NBA coaching ranks are a little depleted these days.

The big problems: They have the worst collection of perimeter guys in the league, which is kind of a problem when you're playing up-tempo basketball and trying to outscore other teams. (It's just too bad they couldn't have moved up last June to take Adam Morrison. Oh, wait, they had the No. 1 pick. Scratch that.) And poor Sam Mitchell wore out his welcome about two years ago. He's like the Artie Lange of NBA coaches; every day that he beats the odds and makes it another day feels like a miracle.

Funny how the anschluss Toronto media (in general) seems to be in full support of Smitch these days while the outside media starts to pick at him again.

The writing is pretty much on the wall for Sam, I doubt he will even be that surpriesed when he gets the call.
I have a feeling the search for the new coach is already slowly going on behind the scenes, and it is just a matter of time before the change is made.

I wouldn't call it the worst, just probably the most evenly average perimeter guys in the league.
the SG position is so important and this has to be the Raptors weakest position

If somebody told me the best three point shooters on the Raps would be Bosh and Graham...
(Parker + Jones + Ford + Peterson)/4 = .300 average
Yuck.

Unlike most writers, Simmons faces his critics with charm.

Matt G. (Toronto): I'm sure you'll ignore any non-Clips questions but I have this: You took a huge dump on the Raptors this week (but their record is severely deflated by a brutal west coast trip). If they beat the Celtics and Knicks this weekend would you pop them ahead? I don't agree they are as bad as you say and I think the impending TJ Ford injury would let Calderon shine...
Bill Simmons: The Toronto fans are great - they have been complaining nonstop since yesterday's column. That's a top-5 fan base right there. I based that Raps prediction on the fact that Ford will inevitably get hurt and they are going to probably throw Bargnani out there for 35-40 minutes a game so he can make his mistakes... and don't think Colangelo isn't smart enough to subtly tank the last 6 weeks for Oden or Durant. I just feel like they have the best chance of tanking down the stretch and making it not seem too obvious.

I'm really upset that we're going into Sam Mitchell's 3rd season and just now calling him Smitch.
Best part about the guy is his nick name.

I love Bill Simmons, without a doubt the funniest sportswriter out there. Raptors' perimeter can't be the worst when there are teams that start kevin ollie and eric snow. If mopete is healthy at least we have a choice between starting him and Fred Jones.

True, but the Cavs have LeBron James and Larry Hughes...I wouldn't mind starting a below average player alongside those two. And whoever plays SG for the Sixers isn't going to get the ball anyway because of Iverson. Hell, I bet you could stick me in there and no one would notice.

If they hold onto Mitchell for the rest of the season it only means the guy they want as their new coach isnt available till then.

Bingo. I can see Mitchell being fired after Christmas if the Raptors lose big time to teams they should be beating. I think having a brutal west coast trip so early was not helpful, though. Hopefully the Raps will beat the East, like last night and (hopefully) tonight. Oh, I hope I didn't just curse them
