it's pretty horrible. the only thing i like about it is the 31st pick...i guess it might be a good salary dump but it screws us for next year and i don't think that's the direction this franchise should take.
At first glance I agreed with Skywalker. We are losing the core of our team and going in a direction that I don't like. Upon closer inspection, though, I realized that this is that start of what could be some really good cap decisions. As far as the play of the Raptors immediately post-trade, I don't think much would change. The only difference is the contracts.
Antonio Davis is signed until 2005/06 at a true max deal, but Latrell Sprewell is only signed until next year if he doesn't take his player option. If he does take it, it is only for one more season anyway.
Lindsay Hunter has an expiring contract that I thought shouldn't be included, but then I checked on Charlie Ward. Actually, he has an expiring contract as well that is more valuable than is Hunter's. This makes Ward an upgrade.
Morris Peterson is one heck of a bargain for his contribution. I thought I would never fully like a trade with him in it because of his rookie contract status. This trade has changed my mind. Frank Williams has some potential to be a good point guard if he can stay healthy this season, and he is an EVEN BETTER bargain that Mo Pete.
Othella Harrington is the only big problem. His contract is ridiculous, but only has two years left on it. Alvin Williams is potentially signed until 2007/08 if he takes the option on his ridiculous deal.
Overall, this is a great move for the Raptors if we have decided that we should be in rebuilding mode now. For the time being, a combination of a healthy Vince, Spree, and Bosh would be exciting. Even if we didn't win all that much, we would have more room for the young guys to mature together on the court rather than just in practice. Our team would basically look like this:
PG Frank Williams (toss him out there and give him a shot)
SG Vince Carter (come back big guy)
SF Latrell Sprewell (still got a little left in the tank)
PF Chris Bosh (yes, I think he would start if this trade goes down) C Michael Bradley (another young guy with a chance)
Charlie Ward (vet)
Lamond Murray (vet)
JYD (vet with energy)
Othella (vet)
Montross (stiff)
Chris Anderson (young FA #1)
Rafer Alston (young FA #2)
We probably would not make the playoffs, but we have an interesting mix of vets and youth to grow with. I actually like the way this trade points the franchise in. Would NY do it? I don't know. Layden does whatever he wants, but I like it. Way to go out on a limb RapsFan.

i agree with RollWithEm. expiring contracts nowadays have a high impact on trade values. we get red of AD's contract and in return, have high paid contracts that'll expire soon, in 1 - 2 years.
although, the only real problem is trading Mo Pete + Alvin for Spree, but seeing as how Spree's contract could expire in 1 or 2 years makes this trade much more appealing.
besides, we get a rookie in Frank Williams to work with whom is not that bad after all and have a good backup in Ward.
also, that 31st pick would be really valuable as well, as i'm highly interested in picking up Lang or Ebi through trades of getting a late first-rounder (see Mo Pete for NJ's pick thread) or an early second-rounder.
so this trade gives off 3 positives:
gets rid of AD
starts Raps off with younger talent
another valuable pick in a deep talented draft
go with it, but would really hate to see Alvin go. sometimes sacrifices have to be made.
As a general rule, I would not want to trade with the Knicks. There is no one on that team that earns their keep with the exception of Kurt Thomas. Everyone else is old and/or grossly overpaid.
No team in the east is going to win a championship in the next 3-4 years so i don't understand why we don't just completely rebuild. i think a trade involving vince for wagner or butler and an expiring contract would help us in the long run. Then we take Bosh and develop his inside game for an awesome inside outside combo. This trade with the knicks would give us a ton of cap room in 2 years and with a couple big signings we'd be a big contender.
if that trade went down i wud stop supportin da raps that team wud be nasty

yup, they'd be real bad for a couple of years. this team would seriously be competing for a guaranteed top 4 pick next year...and i don't think it's such a bad thing. our team would still be competing most nights but we'd be winning VERY few games against any team from the west. however, we might just set ourselves up for something VERY special. i really think that it would be nice set ourselves up for greatness before we give cleveland our 1st rounder. memphis, this year, is actually quite well prepared for being robbed of their lotto pick.
by picking up a one or maybe two AWESOME draft picks and by dumping a whopping 25 million in salary over the next seasons we could look something like this (maybe? i'm not sure exactly when certain FAs will become available)...of course i don't know why new york would ever do this so lets assume our draft picks are swapped this year.
2004 raptors:
raymond felton (just off his roy season)
VC (entering his prime)
spree
stromile swift (we'd be one of his biggest suitors, and him coming off his best season yet clearing room by having ward's, mo pete's, hakeems, bradleys contracts coming off the books)
sofoklis schortsianitis (turning 20!)
that team has one year to develop before spree's contract even comes off the books. could we bring magloire back? qrich and big Z?
on the other hand this deal might work for the knicks too. they put a decent team on the court that may or may not make playoffs:
AW/eisley
houston
shandon anderson/lee nailon
diceman/bosh
thomas
and will have TONS of money in a couple of years to go with some good draft picks. i haven't seen any deals that really improve the knicks next year and in the future...but there are probably tons.
