Local Hero comes to town
Everyone's getting ready for the biggest day of the Raptors' home season.
Local hero Steve Nash, one of two Canadians in the NBA and by far the most popular, brings the Phoenix Suns to Toronto on Wednesday night, his lone visit of the season and a game that always creates the biggest media buzz of the year.
Nash, who played for a decade on Canada's national team and has become the most famous Canadian basketball player ever, will be awarded the national male athlete of the year award that night as Toronto, and Canada, celebrates one of its favorite sons.
The Nash factor will likely take some of the spotlight away from two other aspects of a Suns visit that are more important, long term, to Toronto.
This will mark the first time Bryan Colangelo's Raptors team will play host to his former employers, and that should be interesting. And the rumor mill has been churning for months that current Suns assistant coach Marc Iavaroni would be high on a list to replace Sam Mitchell if Mitchell's demise were to come about, so that will be another thing for folks to feast on.
REPLAY: The Raptors will be well rested for that date with Phoenix.
A 110-104 loss in Memphis on Saturday was the last game they'll play before that Jan. 3 encounter while the Suns play Sunday and Tuesday.
The time will also give Toronto a chance to think, 'What if?' The Raptors fell behind by 24 points in the second quarter of Saturday's game but led with six minutes to go and were down two with a minute left before faltering.
Ka Bosh: There's an error in this article this is the second time that Colangelo will face is former employees.

Most Americans think of Canada as one really big, cold city. They must be referring to Magloire as the 2nd Canadian player. Last time I heard Dalembert is not officially a Canadian. I think he can become one or something if he gets the paperwork done.

i've heard Steve Nash say that he was going to go to either the Suns or the Raptors...so close to becoming contenders. Imagine. "Steve Nash to Chris Bosh...Bosh with the Jam!"

Re: Local Hero comes to town
Nash just had a nice game against the Bulls, using a misdirection play drawn up by D'Antoni to help secure the win on a Barbosa jump shot.
Emotional game, though. Hopefully they are gassed tomorrow.

Was he going to take the MLE to come here - i.e a 40 million dollar or 70% pay cut.
We had no cap room.

I will be at the game tonight, with my Retro Steve Nash Phoenix jersey. Hopefully, we can get an MVP chant going every time he's at the line.

Re: Local Hero comes to town
I've never understood why Nash gets a free ride from Canadian hoop fans for not playing for the national team (hasn't played since 2000).
He'd make the team an instant contender (to qualify for the Olympics at least). I don't know if it's too late to qualify for 2008 in Beijing, and he'll probably be too old in 2010.
His buddy Dirk never fails to play for Germany even though the Germans can't compete with the US, Greece, Spain, etc...

Re: Local Hero comes to town
^ Nash was a staple of the program for years. He hasn't played recently because of the odd and disturbing firing of Jay Triano, but more importantly because he needs to rest his back for the people that pay his wages.
