Denver Post: Marc Spears likes the Raptors

Quote:
Colangelo went against the grain by trading big for small when he acquired point guard T.J. Ford from Milwaukee for 2006 all-NBA rookie forward Charlie Villanueva during the offseason. But the move has paid off. Ford has adequately filled a much-needed void at point guard, while Villanueva has been stymied by injuries. Add December's Eastern Conference rookie of the month in forward Jorge Garbajosa, former Euroleague player of the year Anthony Parker, guard Fred Jones, swingman Morris Peterson, center Rasho Nesterovic and forward Joey Graham and Toronto has an up-and-coming team.

"There is a buzz about the team and the new direction," said Colangelo, who took over the struggling franchise Feb. 28. "It's an exciting time. There has been a lot of talk about basketball, and people feel like we're moving in the right direction."

The only major concern in Toronto is the status of coach Sam Mitchell. Colangelo scoffed at rumors swirling around his coach.

"Sam is the coach of the team regardless of the speculation," Colangelo said.

Expect Toronto to continually get better this season and finish as the surprise team of the NBA. And even if they make the postseason with a losing record, the Raptors shouldn't be taken lightly by any team in the East.

"I'm very excited for the future," Colangelo said.

Another great article, I knew that Colangelo would change things around in Raptor land, but I didn't think it would be done so qucikly. But we cannot get over confident, because we're still three games under 500. We still need to go on a good run, but if everyone stays healthy we should make a nice run, especially with all these home games coming up.

Also glad to see that Colangelo likes the job Mitchell is doing.

I'm really loving all this positive press the Raps are getting. It's a nice change from the usual stream of "they don't know how to run a team north of the border" crap. I never realized how hard our schedule has been so far, at least compared to the cupcake games we have the rest of the season. Although it should be noted that all East games aren't easy ones - I don't want to play Cleveland or Orlando very much right now.

That's what happens when you hire a decent GM, eh?

I love how people take solace in validation from US media sources. That makes me chuckle.

It doesn't matter that it's a US source. It could be from Spain, Algeria, Brazil or Zimbabwe... its the fact that someone outside Toronto is actually paying attention to the team and optimistic about it. Anytime you get positive recognition from an unbiased source, it's a nice feeling. It's like the difference between receiving praise from your mom and from a stranger.
