Jose Calderon

Well we've have threads devoted to various players but none have been made recently about his latest form.
Ever since T.J.'s ankle injury, Calderon has had to step in and prove to be a leader at the point guard spot. Needless to say, he has surpassed my expectations.
The more and more I watch Calderon play and execution, the more I prefer him to the inconsistent and poorly led offense of T.J. Ford. Countless times during the season have I yelled at the screen as he runs around, ignoring Bosh and pick'n'rolls until he jacks up a shot. Calderon, on the other hand, is composed and methodical in the way he approaches opposing defences. He has incredible patience and though he lacks T.J.'s explosiveness, he makes the most of his game. His jumper is more consistent and his dribble drive isn't as wild.
All in all, as you might've guessed by now, I've began to appreciate Calderon's game while losing both patience and love for T.J.'s.
I'd love to hear everyone's opinion about the recent performances by Calderon and how it compares to T.J.'s.
Also, I ask this question: Did B.C. do a mistake by signing Ford to that 3 year extension in the summer?
And does Toronto now risk losing Calderon once his contract is up(he is still quite young) as his role will always be slightly inferior to Ford's?

Re: Jose Calderon

We all love Jose...but If he was the starter and there was no TJ...or TJ was on the bench, i'm guessing we might not love him as much. I think we have a great situation and I still think Jose is a backup point guard.

Don't forget when bosh was out, TJ kept us going and won a few games single handedly (portland, LAC, minnesota).

TJ has a lot of talent and a lot of upside and we should all be grateful that Jose has played so well, rather than turning it into a negative about TJ.

Re: Jose Calderon

Yes, Calderon is a great backup. Yes, Calderon lit up the Bobcats in his start on Monday. No, he is not as good as TJ. I remember all those saying Jose should start when TJ was playing poorly in the beginning of the season, where are you guys now?

We have a great point guard combination, why not just leave it at that?

Re: Jose Calderon

If we want to get a good 2/3 in the offseason are most tradeable asset will be one of our point guards. For the best of this team one of them has to go so that we have two valualble assets playing more then 48 minutes total.

I expect one of them to go...not sure which one/

Re: Jose Calderon

I think its a good debate and really shouldnt reflect negatively on either player. My take is Calderon is the better pure pg and TJ the better lead guard or look to shoot first guard(whatever the term). I think you need two good generals to run the team so right now it doesnt seem to be a problem. If the time comes where Calderon's play is off the charts you could think of making a move to improve the ball club but dont see it being an issue at this point.

Re: Jose Calderon

I like Calderon a lot, he finally has his confidence back, which is really good because he's not afraid to shoot the ball anymore, because he knows he can make it. He's also a very good passer, he knows who to give the ball too. Some say that he's the best back up point guard in the league, I don't know if that's really true but he's up there, and he helps the Raptors a lot when T.J hurt or he's resting on the bench. Hopefully he can keep it up. He's a real asset to this team.

Re: Jose Calderon

I love Jose Calderon, I love the way he plays, I love his energy and his competitiveness, and I love we have him locked-up for another season.

That being said, why do we have to choose between him and Ford?

We have both!

^ One of the big reasons Toronto is among the league leaders in fewest turnovers is our Spanish connection. Jose and Jorge combine for an astounding 2.35 turnovers per 48 minutes a game.

Funny guy, I made my post after the first half which he wasn't playing really well.
Obviously he turned it around in a hurry, and how! Sublime fourth quarter, slightly reminded me of Alvin Williams for a sec.

Re: Jose Calderon

Calderon is a nice player. I love his energy and I love his passion (did you see him tonight in the 4th????). I think he and Bosh are an excellent connection and I think he and Ford are a great combination: they give you energy all the time but different kinds of energy.

I see no reason to trade either, unless they start not getting along with each other. Give Calderon an extension now. It's obvious he's a keeper.

Re: Jose Calderon

I've watched pretty much every Raps game this year, and it's clear Calderon is the more consistent player. TJ puts up great games far and few between. I'd rather have the ball in Calderon's hands when the game is on the line. His decision making abilities are on another level compared to Fords.
