Colangelo and the Divisional Standings white board
I'm sure you guys caught during our broadcast that Bryan has put a white board up in the locker room area with the Divisional and Conference standings on it. Our players can not avoid the standings even if they wanted to. They know how many games separate the Division leaders and losers.
I don't get it, personally. If we were a game or less up on the Nets, everyone would know. If we were way up on them, which we practically are at the moment, nobody would care. I honestly don't think this is a gimmick for the players. They know where they are at. I doubt there is one player on the team that doesn't know his exact field goal percentage or how many turnovers he averages per assist, etc.. Doubly so for any of our computer literate guys, like Bosh.
Is it a reminder that Colangelo expects more out of our team? Is it something for the coaches to see every day? Is it just something for guys like Chuck and Leo to prattle on about? Somebody sort it out for me.

Re: Colangelo and the Divisional Standings white board
Couple of thoughts in my head about that board.
#1. On one hand I don't like it, it is putting emphasis on the big picture rather than the game to game focus that (I think) the team had succefully held throughout Jan/Feb.
#2. On the other I like it as a way of upping the pressure a little, to make the neccesary transition to playoff basketball. To get the players realizing that each game has a higher importance than just a single game now.
Overall I do worry that it will mess with the successful mindset the team has been playng with, but I think this may be a way of easing them into the playoffs. I also think its unusual that BC as opposed to Sam was the one that put it up.

I like it. I think it reminds the team of the big picture, and emphasizes that the ultimate goal is a championship. It's BC's way of saying, "yeah, sure we are a respectable team now, but let's not get complacent and forget that we are going to have to better teams like Detroit, Cleveland, and Miami. Each game counts if we want to better position ourselves and get home court advantage."

You really think that if the board is not up there, the players will not check out the standings? They do know, and the whiteboard just reminds them even more.

It sets the mentality that the time to win is now. That is important for a team with some youth, who expect to get other chances in the future, and some players that have not been in the race.

I think, so far, it has lowered our intensity, to some phantom degree. We have been flat all month. Have to figure if the race was closer in the AD, we'd be playing harder. Sad statement about the team.
This is not at all a post blaming Bryan or anyone else for the poor March we've had so far, but you have to wonder what seeing that gap on the board every morning--even if it is narrowing--is doing to our guys. "We're still up five games," can become "we're still up two games," pretty quick. How long do we wait before the team starts playing hard?

Hey, that point is more then 5 days old... its the 5 day rule,,, the point is off limits to further rebuttal.
I'm not a sports psychologist. Neither is Bryan Colangelo apparently.
