Raps' MoPete eyes turnaround

Quote:
MILWAUKEE–When summer rolls around and Morris Peterson has a say in where he'll play next season, he's going to remember the up-and-down ride he's had with the Raptors this season.

Starter, backup, starter, backup, key member of the rotation, deep bench player; it's the kind of inconsistent role that's going to give him pause to think about what he wants to do next.

"That's something I'm definitely going to have to look at when the summer comes and evaluate what I want to do and where I want to be," the free-agent-to-be said yesterday morning.

But when that summer free agency period rolls around, Raptor coach Sam Mitchell hopes Peterson can look back on a final quarter of the regular season and whatever the post-season has to offer and recall a time when he played a significant role.

"That's something I talked to Mo a little bit about (yesterday), getting himself both mentally and physically ready to play down this playoff stretch run," Mitchell said after the team's shootaround hours before last night's game with the Bucks. "We've got 19 games to go and you need your experienced players but you need them at their best."

The question is: Will Peterson get the chance to play himself back into a substantial role.

Peterson has seen the majority of his minutes go to newcomer Juan Dixon in the past five games, something which doesn't sit well with the 29-year-old swingman.

"It's always frustrating when you don't play as much as you want to, but I'm not going to let that stop me from trying to accomplish my goals," he said. "My first goal is to win.

"Everything else will take care of itself."

Mitchell has confidence in Peterson, he just has to see signs that the seven-year vet is on top of his game.

"Mo has done some good things for us, but I think we would all agree he hasn't been as consistent as he was last year," said the coach.

The odds are he won't re-sign, and that's a good thing for us. He's erratic and takes momentum-killer shots. Bye Mo, don't come back.

very harsh words my friend. it will be interesting to see what he gets/demands on the FA market this offseason. with rashard lewis opting out of the last 2 years and $20+mil of his contract, i think we can pretty much count on him being out of our price range. at the beginning of the season i really wanted to see mo retire a rap, now i don't see him as being a big piece of the recent success we have had, effectively earmarking himself "expendable".

that said. we for sure need a swing man to take some minutes. not sure what dixon's role will be in the future, but taking a quick glance at hollinger's list of FAs, i don't see a whole lot out there that excites me for how much i THINK we will spend.

all in all, what i think doesn't matter. i am a fan, and am very confident in colangelo and WHATEVER he does. he has proved to the NBA that he really can turn a sinking ship around. just take a second to look at the Jones trade. what appeared to be a great oppurtunity to dump some salary, has given us a starter for the past two weeks. in the babcock days, we would let jones sit and rott and paid his checks. Bryan makes something out of nothing, i have 100% trust with the guy.

by the way, welcome to bbb.net.

everyone on here rules.

He's the only guy that stayed with the team during all the crap years...and even the playoff years. If Mo Pete leaves it would be a very sad moment for Raptors Basketball. I never want this guy to leave. If it was up to me...he'd be a Raptor for life.

As inconsistent as Mo has been, he is the longest serving Raptor, and he has contributed tremendously to this team. In fact, he is among the passionate ones among the Raptors about this team. His clutch three pointers are always a fond memory.
I know he doesn't always make the right decisions, but come on guys, he deserves a lot of respect from every Raptor fan.

Wow. The 'what have you done for me lately' argument.

At this point Mo is talking about signing with another team in exactly the same manner as he did when he signed the Hornets' offer sheet. Doesn't mean he wants to leave-he just wants to make sure that a) the Raptors offer him what he is worth rather than expecting him to sign for less, and b) that other teams will be interested in him (thinking he wants to leave Toronto) and make offers the Raptors can match.

The idea of Peterson leaving the team now--when we are thisssss close to something great and lasting--is crazy.

But I don't know what BC thinks of Mo or where Mo fits into our teams long term goals. Hopefully we keep him but I can say in complete honesty I have no ****ing idea of what Colangelo plans this summer.

I don't mind Mo on the team if he only plays <20 minutes a game, I don't want him as an integral part of the rotation.

Re: Raps' MoPete eyes turnaround

I was talking about it with a friend the other day, there is only Bosh and Mo from the Carter Era...

Pretty crazy when you think about it eh?

I want Mo back, I have faith in him. I think his inconsistency is due to his inconsistent PT. Last year when he had more PT, he shown that he is consistent. Anyways, I want him back. I think it is such a luxury to have both him and AP as lockdown defenders.

Re: Raps' MoPete eyes turnaround

imo, i should believe there are too many games left for mo peterson to continue to be playing choice few minutes. he'll become option number 3 again at some point, i think, which will probably change his mind about leaving town come the summer months (whereas if you asked him today i think we all know how he'd answer) but it bugs me that he has to emerge again. it started with fred earlier this season, but these 'slumps' that players like fred and mop occasionally suffer through make me uncomfortable. mop especially. where did this come from? we already know he's a bona fide 30 mpg player in this league- so when we're slumping as a team, why do we keep him nailed to the bench? when we do resort to him, he's now playing under tremendous pressure and is hardly a shell of his former self. i don't know where the blame (if any) is to be laid about this troublesome situation, but there must've been a better way to handle it.

i think the same thought will be reiterated when he does re-establish himself as a cog in our rotation and puts on a heroic show in a few games down the stretch and into the playoffs, but i'll always think back to it: why did we have to suffer through that period of... zero value from this player? was it inevitable? or does it have something to do with something else that we should change- the alternative being that we'll probably see it again with another player in the future. two times in one year with players the type of morris peterson and fred jones strikes me as either a very rare coincidence or a sign of a problem that deserves to be addressed.

peace

Re: Raps' MoPete eyes turnaround

Mo will be harder to replace than we think. He is a clutch player. Seen him walk up to the line and nail 3 FT's with no time left and that takes balls. Not afraid to take the big shots, and makes a lot of them.

He is a hard worker and professional guy in the locker room. Doesn't cause problems.

His D is extremely overrated here in Toronto because we never had anybody elst that played D on the wings after Alvin went out. He is far from a lockdown guy and gets lit up all the time. But so do most wings in the nba. Who shuts down Ray Allen, Kobe, Iverson, etc? Almost nobody. They have off nights but its usually not due to a single defender. At least MoP tries hard and makes guys work for their points.

Stars always get more leeway to play through bad stretches. Thats just how the nba works. Second tier guys get benched for the exact same streakiness. And that probably adds to the streakiness.

Re: Raps' MoPete eyes turnaround

I'd hate to see Mo leave at the end of this season, just when the organization has finally turned things around and are actually winning more than we are losing. He's been with the team through the ups and downs. He doesn't always make the right decisions on the court, but come on, who does? He has shown that he is a clutch player and he plays with hustle and passion. Given the inconsistent playing time he's had this season, I find it hard to blame him for being as inconsistent as he is this season. He had 20 minutes Monday night, and put in a good effort, but tonight, he had what? Only 4 minutes. Hard to explain.
