Re: Best Raptors coach ever?

Butch Carter was a very good coach.

However, he sucked at being sane.

Re: Best Raptors coach ever?

I would rank them, the first three being satisfied with their performance as "coahce"

1. Butch Carter
2. Brendan Malone (he got 30 wins from an abysmal crew)
3. Sam Mitchell

The following three were unsatisfactory

4. Kevin O'Neill
5. Darrell Walker (at least he tried)
6. Lenny Wilkens (collecting a paycheque)

Re: Best Raptors coach ever?

I voted for butch carter cause i thought his style meshed with vince. (he yelled at vince)
And he was the coach when the raptors were a hot team that was the talk of the NBA.

Re: Best Raptors coach ever?

I can't believe 4 out of 15 people here think that Lenny Wilkens was our best ever coach.

Can't deny the success that Lenny had elsewhere, but he was simply no longer putting in the effort once he was here.

Re: Best Raptors coach ever?

I can't believe it but I voted Smitch. It's all based on the remainder of this year and making the playoffs but Sam is Bosh and vice versa. The impact Sam has had on Chris's career is huge. You can't tell me you don't hear Sam in Chris's voice when he speaks. The same could be said of a lot of the players on the team this year. He truly has everyone working for the same cause, many of them selflessly. He delivered. He had the roster for the first time ever and he did it. He coached the rookies, euro's and newly Raps into a team faster than anyone else in the league could have. Sam doesn't hold back and his candor is perfect the city.

What would Sam do with Butch's team? I dunno but I don't think Butch would have done as much with Sam's.

When you put it like that I felt Sam was a solid choice. Lenny would have been my pick if we were talking about best coach to coach the raptors rather then who coached the raptors best.

Re: Best Raptors coach ever?

i don't know about the 'best' or whatever, there's not much history of success to choose from, but my least favourite was unquestionably KO.

when you think back to that period in general, this team was trying to make all the right basketball decisions, starting with babcock and o'neill, and it left a sour taste in my mouth. i think we later realized that running/building a pro basketball team could not be done very easily straight from 'the' textbook, that there were other equally important factors involved, and i'm hardly surprised that their respective tenures as GM and coach ended so abruptly and without reward.

i'm not going to lie here, i don't know if o'neill had a friend on the team anywhere. he seemed like a very bitter man from afar, an angry man, disappointed in seemingly everything, and i can't say i really liked that. i know he didn't (and still doesn't, i'm sure). babcock might've had more 'friends' but i don't think he won anyone over with his leadership qualities.

i hope it's remembered forever: the much-ballyhooed textbook was schooled in 03/04. if anyone suggests that a team just needs to get "back to basics and improve its basketball know-how", our babcock/o'neill experience should be cited immediately. it's not that simple. grunwald and lenny may have been on one end, these guys may have been on the other, but it probably won't work until you manage to find a comfortable middle ground.

anyway, i veered off-topic here but i enjoyed KO the least. i don't know if that means he's the worst, i still don't own the criteria for the worst and the best, but if we held a coaches draft, i'd take KO right at the end. hell, i'd walk out before i'd be forced to take him.

peace

Not that I'm endorsing the idea, but the court of public opinion doesn't put BC on the stand too often, half because he is part of an iconic basketball family, and half because he usually makes good moves. After doubting his move to Toronto the Raps became the AD leaders, after doubting the Ford trade Villanueva is repeatedly injured and Ford helps steer the team into a bright future.

Who out there has the cojones to take Mitchell to task if he hires the most coveted free agent coach on the market? Smitch's friends like Barkley might complain, as would Doug Smith, who has been in Smitch's pocket this season for some bizarre (possibly masochistic) reason... Raps fans who are diehards for Mitchell are a minority it seems.

Phoenix had a lot of coaching turnover with BC at the helm. Paul Westphal was replaced with the ancient Cotton Fitzsimmons, who retired shortly after and was succeeded by Danny Ainge, then Scott Skiles took over, then Frank Johnson, then finally Mike D'Antoni. Six coaches in ten years, a span during which the team averaged 44 wins.
