The merits of the one-year rule will be endlessly debated. I think it's clear that if the NBA instituted a rule like the NFL (minimum 3 years) the quality of play in the NBA would get instantly better. Why? Most high school kids/freshmen aren't ready for the NBA. From a business standpoint, the NBA is wasting that guaranteed money and, to see a decent return on their investment, will have to give a second contract based on potential. There are exceptions to this rule, of course. Some players are impact players out of the gate. But the vast majority would benefit from being in college for 3 years (as would the college game and the NBA game).
With that said, both Oden and Durant would be stupid not to come out. Simply put, it's not worth them risking a catastrophic injury.
