Well I think we both agree that non-optimal decisions are made because of the world we live in.

well, i don't know what you would call it- "contract" or not- but that's just nomenclature. they appear to be preserving a relationship built on certain guidelines, hence the fines and penalties and whatnot. i don't know why someone would argue that point, especially when the support appears to only contradict the argument. maybe i just don't understand what you're saying. maybe you're not even replying to me. not sure.
I don't think the fines were done to protect the NCAA... they were done to protect the NBA's own interests.

Most NCAA big time coahces hate the new one and out rule.. and I think alot of them hate it because it is the NBA that is indirectly imposing its will on the NCAA.

Re: price tag for wooing underclassmen?

The merits of the one-year rule will be endlessly debated. I think it's clear that if the NBA instituted a rule like the NFL (minimum 3 years) the quality of play in the NBA would get instantly better. Why? Most high school kids/freshmen aren't ready for the NBA. From a business standpoint, the NBA is wasting that guaranteed money and, to see a decent return on their investment, will have to give a second contract based on potential. There are exceptions to this rule, of course. Some players are impact players out of the gate. But the vast majority would benefit from being in college for 3 years (as would the college game and the NBA game).

With that said, both Oden and Durant would be stupid not to come out. Simply put, it's not worth them risking a catastrophic injury.

Michael Jordan fined 25,000 by the NBA for mentioning Durant before he declares/
