Smitch plays coy with media

Sam is one happy coach
Raps GM boosts Mitchell's spirits
By MIKE GANTER -- Sun Media
Raptors coach Sam Mitchell was clearly pleased with the kudos from GM Bryan Colangelo.
A day after his general manager gave him his most public commendation since joining the Raptors, head coach Sam Mitchell was basking in the glow of the praise.
Well, basking may be a bit of an exaggeration but his happy metre definitely was reaching new levels.
In conversations with various media representatives on Wednesday, Colangelo praised the work Mitchell and his coaching staff have done this year and went so far as to say he would be surprised if Mitchell didn't wind up as coach of the year, an award he is considered a very strong candidate to win.
That has led to discussion that Colangelo eventually will offer a long-term deal to Mitchell.
Colangelo maintains that is something he will address with Mitchell at the end of the season, which has been the plan all along.
Mitchell, who claims he doesn't read the daily newspapers, clearly was pleased with the kudos.
"I appreciate that," he said. "It's very nice. It means a lot. It's always nice when your boss thinks highly of you and thinks you're doing a good job."
But Mitchell clammed up when he was asked about a looming contract extension.
"There's a time and place for everything and this is not the time and it's definitely not the place," Mitchell said.
"My worries and concerns are about how we're playing and trying to win basketball games.
"Even when I'm talking off the record with you guys (media) did you ever get the feeling I was concerned about my contract? No. I played most of my career on the end of my contract. What's the difference? I still had a contract."

looks like smitch is playing his card close to his vest. smitch is not asking for a contract extension an bc is not offering anything. obviously smitch will be testing the market for his services as a top candidate for COY an then he will decide on his future in toronto or elsewhere. smitch is now sitting in the drivers seat an he will be sought by many other teams looking for a tough love coach like smitch. apparently its a sellers market for good coaches so smitch should get a big buck an a decent length contract. he deserves it after his 3 years in toronto.

Re: Smitch plays coy with media
^^^ dont you think that bc would have tried to tie down smitch to a new long term contract by now if smitch is such a great coach? instead both are saying they will tell us their intentions after the season ends.
it was reliably reported that bc wanted to bring in iavaroni from phx for this season but was unable to do so contractually. do you think that bc has changed his mind an will now want smitch to stay all because the raps surprised everybody by winning the division?
perhaps bc is boosting smitch as a great coach an possible COY as a favor to help smitch leave toronto an that will let bc bring in iavaroni.

It could be that neither Sam nor BC want to rock the boat. The team is doing very well, so why change anything? Look at what happened when the Knicks gave Isiah an extension. I'm sure they'll talk in the offseason. BC has strongly hinted of this recently. Personally, nowhere in the article suggests what you're saying. You're jumping at conclusions. To me, it just seems like Sam is sticking with his agreement not to discuss contract extension in-season.

Yes, because it would screw up the team's chemistry. I mean, it's one thing to fire a coach after they were successful for 2 years but didn't get to the promiseland (ex: Pistons with Larry Brown after firing Carlisle). But this is the team's first year of success, you think you can go in and explain to Bosh, Ford and co. that Mitchell still wasn't the right guy as coach after bringing the team to a drastic change in record and making the players be successful? That Iavaroni, an untested head coach, will be the better choice.
You think Colangelo is going to let Mitchell walk after what has happened and the obvious chemistry that he has with his players? Do you realize how stupid he will look? Leaving a Coach of the Year nominee walk through the door so they can bring in an assistant?
Think...about...it.
Do you realize how retarded that sounds?
p.s.
It has been stated by both BC and Mitchell that they are waiting until the season ends before they start contract negotiatoins. Doing it now would just be a distraction, considering it would probably be a lengthy negotation based on Mitchell's unexpected success.

Re: Smitch plays coy with media
^^ good points SickGane .... but i think that bc must look ahead an decide if smitch is capable of taking the raps to the next level. this might require a coach who is better at game play and strategy. smitch is weak at xs an os and that is something that is very necessary to move the raps to the next level. surely you must agree with me on that.
also bc will prolly want to bring in more international player who will not want to play under smitch but would come to play under somebody like iavaroni. bc wanted to bring in iavaroni for this season but was stopped due to contract blocks. you know that too.
what i cant appreciate is your completely emotional attachment to smitch as if the raps would fall apart if another coach is hired. what you dont want to accept is the probability that smitch may want to leave toronto and coach closer to his large young family of four kids which must surely be important to smitch.
if smitch gets a great contract offer from another team i think he might just want to take up another challenge that might be more secure than staying with the raps an not being able to take them to the next level.
btw.. didnt the detroit pistons drop their successful coach and bring in somebody else.?
