i wrote about this some time ago but not for childress or even marvin- josh smith, though, is on my personal radar for this summer. childress? i've never liked him. you're right, marvin's intriguing, but i'd want a proven player for either of our guards- smith fits the bill for me. probably won't get him but i'm allowed to dream. he just seems like the perfect fit, all things considered. i've always like his passion, his focus doesn't wane in the way you'd expect from a hs'er experiencing virtually zero success as a pro, and he does seem like a 'good person' too, imo (team suspensions notwithstanding). i think we're trying to also build a versatile frontline with bargnani and bosh, and smith would help augment it further- offensively somewhat, but moreso defensively. there'd be no 3, 4 or 5- they'd be as interchangeable, imo, as any frontcourt in the recent history of this game.
damn... dreaming again. wrong thread.
anyway, calderon was excellent this year. the only controversy (though it was a big one) we had at the point this year came in terms of who should be starting. that's awesome. and we still don't have a consensus answer. that's even better. almost perfect. it would be tough to lose either of these guys because our point guard situation is almost ideal at the moment, but we might have to. depends on how much we
really valued our 1/2 punch. if they had been healthy all year, it would've been even better- but that's a perenially surviving 'if'. no use thinking about it.
there's one thing, though, that did bother me, but i'm unsure of how it related specifically to tj and jose: our team's frequent lapses in energy. i'm not talking about the kind that define the sport of basketball (i.e. the ultimate game of runs). i'm talking more about nights off. this team got clobbered almost regularly... twice a month... randomly... but not so randomly, imo, because it ultimately became less than surprising, and more seen as inevitable for it to occur again... but randomly.
it could have been even worse without jose and/or tj, i'm not sure, but i think our team needs to get a handle on it before it spirals out of control. i don't want it to characterize the toronto raptors into the future. there must be a reason to explain why we would get blown out several times a month, on nights when it seemed like we didn't show up to play. personally, i think it happened in spite of tj and jose- i think they were probably 1 and 1a in terms of being the least comfortable with it, and that's a good thing- and not
because of them, but i'd want to find out for sure. i think it's important to nip it in the bud sooner than later should we have any hopes of becoming legit championship contenders in the near future.

either way, we're lucky to have jose. he was a fantastic surprise this year. he took his game up several levels, which always helps when you're building your team from the ground up.
