Smitch signs new contract, details, presser at 2pm today
http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/216155
Sam has reportedly signed a three year deal, with an option for a fourth, for $4M a year plus bonuses. Compared to other Coach of the Year winners, his contract is very modest.
Sam told reporters that he was interested in retaining his assistant coaches. We know that Alex English wants to be a head coach but the odds of an NBA team looking his way don't seem too good. Jay Triano will likely survive another coaching turnover, his passport still his bullet proof vest, and we may see Darrick Martin join the staff if he isn't offered a playing contract by Colangelo.
Press conference or official announcement tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Smitch's contract details, update on assistant coaches
I'd like to see Darrick Martin added to the staff so he's not taking up a roster spot. He'd still be able to run around during practice, as well.
Triano needs to go and Colangelo needs to bring in a big man/defense coach.
Four million is reasonable for Mitchell. I hope he realizes what the expectations are for next year: more wins, playoffs, and getting out of the first round.

i think this is as much a PR move as it is a basketball move, losing the coach of the year would be a big blow

Since when is Colangelo worried about how a move would play out in the media. I recall that most basketball columnists were ripping him for trading Charlie V for TJ. BC hasn't been afraid to go against the grain. If he felt that keeping Mitchell was best for the team, then we have to take him at his word.
Btw, in Doug Smith's mailbags, he's sometimes asked why don't the Raps hire Martin as a coach and he always replies that it wouldn't be the same. I'm not sure what exactly he means by that, it would be nice for someone to ask him to clarify this.

I think what he means is that D-Mart acts as a player-coach liaison. He is out there running wind sprints like the guys but at the same time he is mentoring and serving as a go-between with Smitch and the boys. Putting him in a suit (track or formal) changes his relationship with the players.
Or at least this is my interpretation.

Re: Smitch signs new contract, details, presser at 2pm today
MLSE will hold a press conference at 2pm today to announce the signing of Mitchell.
Don't know if he will get into detail about the assistants, I assume he will.

Good move for all the parties involved in this deal. I think it's a good sign when there is finally some stability with this franchise.

I think it's great that BC got this out of the way early in the offseason.
Like Timbo said, good deal that keeps things stable.
