Calderon: "Toronto didnīt want to let me go"
Quote:
MADRID (EuroBasket 2007) - Spanish international Jose Manuel Calderon played a key role in the Toronto Raptors' run to the Atlantic Division title.
Now a contract extension could be on the way.
Calderon, who has one year left on his current deal, told the Spanish Basketball Federation's official website on Tuesday: Unofficially, I know they (Toronto) are very happy with me.
"During the season, there have been several teams interested in my transfer but Toronto didnīt want to let me go."
The 25-year-old did have a terrific year.
He was anonymous as a rookie but he blossomed into a valuable back-up this season and even started 11 times as Toronto won 47 games en route to the Eastern Conference play-offs.
Calderon averaged 13 points and 5.3 assists in 21 minutes per game during the regular season.
"I do feel as I am in the best moment of my career," Calderon said. "Each year I try to improve. Last year, I heard rumours that they were going to trade me but now they respect me. I am not only happy for my season, but also because now, they know me."...

A contract extension this summer? Sure. Get it done, BC.

Excellent. Glad to hear that... hope it happens soon.

wouldn't mind working out an extension this summer. either trade him or extend him, i think. good to see we're moving forward on at least one of the two.
the contract babcock came up with for this guy was roses.

Steve Francis?
Anyways, five years doesn't seem like BC's style anymore.
I could see something like 3 years, $15M.
Paying $13M for our point guards is reasonable, IMO, considering they are such a good pair. Almost the same as having one maxed-out guard like Bibby.

Re: Calderon: "Toronto didnīt want to let me go"
3 years 15 mill is cap friendly and enough time to give us a good 1-2 punch by the end of this deal, TJ should be a much better PG who is capable of playing 30-38 MPG.

4 yrs 20 million. That will prove to be a steal. See Chauncey. Guys like this get better with age. The longer you lock HIM in, the more you'll save in the end.
8 + 5 = 13 IOW a star PG. In our case a duo of stars with different looks. Get it done BC.

Re: Calderon: "Toronto didnīt want to let me go"
Jose would be a starting PG for almost 1/2 the teams in this league IMO, and that definitely includes my Houston Rockets.... the kid's a baller, would be smart for u guys to lock him up now

I don't believe that is feasable. What is the full MLE next year projected to.... that is going to be the low end you will get him at... say 5 years - $35-40 million
He is an RFA next year - he will get the full MLE from somebody, so at the minimum that is what we have to pay him now.
This is a business folks.

i think your logic is flawed...you sign him this year so that you don't have to compete with what other teams are willing to pay him. not saying 5 million a year would get it done, but i would think 3 year 18 million or 4 year 24 million probably would.
also...why are we taking "now a contract extension could be on the way" from a spanish paper as proof that BCo is extending him this summer? i sure hope he is, but until i see something more concrete, i don't think we can be too sure.
