Speaking of Garbajosa...
He did an interview with AS (a Spanish sports daily) after a Q&A session. I'll put the relevant parts here:
Quote:
|
Quick and dirty translation: "Talking about the Spurs, he approves of their philosophy. "In the US, there is a strong culture of the spectacular. However, I see the Spurs, who defend and attack with the same intensity, and always with intelligence, and I love it. They're a team. And little by little, the NBA is playing more like a team, more like Europeans."
"Nowitzki, a German, MVP of the regular season; Parker, French, MVP of the finals; Argentina, Olympic champion; Spain, World champion. Has FIBA reached the level of the NBA? "Maybe the superstars are still better in the US, but the mid-level is practically equal. The difference is the team concept. They [NBA teams] run plays designed for 2 stars and the rest assume secondary roles." "
"And how does the team player adapt to this ego-driven league? "Toronto is different, and that's why I went there. There is a European mentality there, with me, Calderon, Bargnani, Parker... Bosh is learning Spanish [really?]... We all go out together... and it's been a success. Toronto has rediscovered basketball and we're helping it grow." "

If I'm not mistaken, Spanish may have been part of Bosh's curriculum in Dallas at the grade and high-school level. Maybe he already knows the basics.

It's not a requirement, to my knowledge, though it probably should be.
The larger point I was trying to make was Garbajosa's opinion of the the NBA in general and Toronto in particular. I thought it was kinda interesting. I also wonder if Calderon feels the same way and thus that would give TO a kind of hometown advantage when the Raps have to re-sign him after next year.

i recall doug smith (of all people) saying something that may or may not be completely false: if toronto trades jose, he might go back to spain. meaning he has no interest in playing anywhere else. apparently money is no object. it seems all the more absurd as i type this, but he said it.
now, it's probably not true. if it were true i think jose's agent would've at least made the announcement publicly over the past week to avoid looking like a steve francis in any trade that might've gone down. but i think the point in general probably holds: a hometown discount is not out of the question. that said, how much is out of the question? if he can get 8 mil from charlotte, for example, is he willing to drop that to 4 mil for the raps? 'discounts' in this league are usually negligible amounts from a team payroll's point of view. we should be proactive, we should prepare for 6 mil+ as of today. either we're willing to spend that on him or we're not, and proceed accordingly. unless he (or tj) gets injured, the issue won't change.
peace

High school students in the state of texas need to graduate with at least one language credit, with a choice of either French or Spanish.

Therefore Spanish isn't a requirement (since you have a choice). Point and match to me!
What do I know about high schools? I just go to Ph.D. school there...

$6 million for Calderon is reasonable to me. I seriously doubt he'd leave Toronto, esp. with Garbajosa here. They're best friends, no?
