Pietrus would've accepted our offer, GSW wouldn't have matched...
According to Hoopsworld:
Quote:
|
The Warriors' current salary cap figure includes a $3.4-million qualifying offer to Mickael Pietrus, a restricted free agent whom the Warriors can keep on their roster should they match any offer sheets he is given. Pietrus has not gotten the offers he and his agent were expecting this offseason - Pietrus' camp was expecting a full-MLE offer from the Toronto Raptors, which they would have likely taken, but the Raptors decided to give their entire exception sharpshooter Jason Kapono. The Warriors are unlikely to match any big offers to Pietrus, who still has interest from several teams including the Miami HEAT and New Orleans Hornets.

Re: Pietrus would've accepted our offer, GSW wouldn't have matched...
Pietrus is almost exactly what many Raps fans were hoping for this summer, being an athletic wing defender. He isn't a great rebounder and his offensive skill set is raw.
On the other hand, Kapono isn't a good defender or rebounder, and his skills--free throw shooting, spot up shooting, and three point shooting--are semi-redundant with players like Anthony Parker on the wing already.
Did Colangelo drop the ball, or was signing Pietrus a Jared Jeffries-type MLE risk that wasn't worth taking?

I like our two wing pick-ups in Delfino and Kapono. I know that Kapono may not be the lock down defender we all want, but I feel he will get the job done. Add Delfino to the mix with AP and I feel we have a solid 1-2 punch of defence at the 2 spot. Our 2/3's may not be able to keep guys like Lebron off of the block, but if CB4 and Bargnani prove to be a good shot blocking duo, it will go a long way to helping our wing players out.

With a line up of whoever/AP/Kap/Bosh/Gnani, our 3 pts will be coming down like freethrows. I think that is what BC is going for. It will give a lot of room for Bosh to work as well. Let's say Gnani is not starting TJ/Ap/Pietrus/Bosh/Rasho Pretty much going to be the same problem we had in the playoffs, Bosh won't have much room to operate. With TJ/AP/Kap/Bosh/Rasho, the floor will be spread A LOT more and having 2 top 5 (top10?) 3pt shooters in the league, teams will probably not want to leave AP or Kap open plus our ball movement as a team is pretty good so that will force teams to play 1 on 1 with Bosh more.

I like players like Pietrus, but I understand why BC was looking for a sharpshooter like Kapono (or Carroll, who he was targeting as well). Like previously mentioned, Kapono spreads the floor and is one of the best shooters in the league (arguably the best now). Pietrus, on the other hand, may become redundant if either one of Delfino or Graham steps up.

Dee-Zy:
Pietrus is a decent three point shooter (.388), but more importantly he can cut. Don't know how well Kap can fake a shot and dribble into the paint.

This was a deciding factor, I think.
Our management and coaching staff still has faith in Graham. I don't see him getting traded. I expect them to give him another year to show some marked improvement.
As for Delfino, I think he will be used less than we hoped, unless (knock on wood) injuries creep into the equation. We got him for next to nothing so anything we get out of him is a bonus.

I kinda disagree with that in that I think Delfino is ahead of Graham on the depth chart. I think Delfino brings more to the table, basketball-wise, than Graham does.
I also don't think Pietrus is/was the answer. The comparison to Jeffries was very good.

TO's big problem in the playoffs wasn't D...it was O...
Everyone is going to double Bosh in the playoffs...they need more guys to help make other teams pay
We're not a horrible defensive team...just not a good one...Pietrus kinda sucks in that he's athletic but doesn't actdually have much skill...just very raw...

Well not to muddy the waters even more, but Garbo will be the biggest factor in who gets minutes where for wing players. If he comes into camp at 100%, which he probably won't, Sam will keep giving the biggest share of minutes to him and AP.

His defence is exaggerated, but he is a decent defender in a sea of ineffective ones, and his length, speed, and aggressiveness give him potential to improve in that area.

Yes I would have rather had Pietrus, but icehawk makes a good point in that Graham or Delfino breaking out would make the signing redundant.
