English drops 30 in win over Argentina!
English shot the ball very well 4/7 from downtown and 5/5 from 2 point range. Andy Rautins and Olu Famutimi also played well on the wings.

Yup Carl English. He played D1 ball for Hawaii a few years back. He is from Newfoundland I think.... could be wrong .

Re: English drops 30 in win over Argentina!
Yep, he's from Newfoundland. He played at Hawaii and, if I'm not mistaken, stupidly came out for the draft a year early. He can shoot, though. I never understood why the Raptors never gave him at least a try-out since he would've fulfilled a need (obviously Kapono has filled it now). Publicity-wise, it would also pique people's interests to have a Canadian trying out for the team.

Nah, the only people interested in names like Carl English are already basketball and Raptors fans. I realize that basketball Canada isn't the biggest organizations but I find it odd that many so called basketball fans in this country couldn't name more than two Canadian basketball players.

Re: English drops 30 in win over Argentina!
It's a joke that Bill Simmons used on Jason Kapono, but if Carl's name was Carlos and he was from overseas, he probably would've been drafted. The perception is that white, unspectacular American or American-formed players, especially tweener guards, just aren't sought after.
Guys like English, Brown, and Mendez can have long careers overseas and make a lot of money, but they probably aren't good enough for the NBA. Or at least they don't have the physical dimensions or athletic prowess.

Re: English drops 30 in win over Argentina!
I heard Carl make a cooment that he would still like a shot at the NBA. He said that givin the chance to play at every level he has preformed very well, he feels he just needs to get the chance and he would stick......but I guess everyone would say that. I think he could do what Matt Caroll or Devin Brown does.

True. So I guess the Raptors would have to give him a jersey that said "CANADIAN PLAYER" instead of "ENGLISH" to get the word out.
