Bosh or Bargnani- who to defend strong & elite bigs?
This is something I've thought about since midway through last season. I've noticed that Sam usually assigns Bosh to guard strong elite bigs even if the other big has no offensive skill. For example against the Spurs, Pistons, or Celtics, Bosh usually guards Duncan, KG, or Rasheed even though he's susceptible to getting pushed around and needing help (which comprimises the team defense). I feel that Bargnani is better able to maintain position in the post and does a pretty solid job defensively (doesn't usually jump at pump fakes), whereas Bosh can guard the likes of Perkins, Elson, and Webber (or whoever Detroit chooses to replace him with) and can provide better weakside help due to his superior leaping ability. An additional benefit is that Bosh can conserve more of his energy for offense, which he probably needs more than anyone and he stays out of foul trouble.

i'd actually tend to agree with the points you made, i agree about bosh's continued ever-improving shotblocking & the weakside help he & it could provide, trouble is bargnani is more liable to pick up fouls then bosh, specifically against bigger stronger post players.

Neither. You bring in Rasho.

Re: Bosh or Bargnani- who to defend strong & elite bigs?
Bargs is showing tremendous improvement already in this department. He's showing a lot of discipline and not taking the stupid fouls. I think he's already stronger than Bosh is on the block. And like dirty bird mentioned, Bosh might be better suited to float and act as the shot blocker.
We NEED Bargs to develop into a capable defender and rebounder in the post for this combo to be successful. We can't use Rasho as a crutch. There will be growing pains, but we have to let Andrea develop on the court.
To me he's showing a lot of improvement.
He's doing the things we expect him to do now, rebound play some defense. But these weren't things that came easily to him and he's obviously worked very hard in the off season.
So far this season, he's shown to be average in these areas, which is a HUGE improvement over the 2-3 rebound performances he was giving us last year. I expect him to continue to improve all season.

Bargs is a better defender imo.
I think Bosh could hold his ground better against some bigger guys, though.
If any have a real problem, we can always bring in Rasho or Hump.

Agreed.
Bargs has improved, and is pretty strong on the block.
Bosh is much more effective as a help shot blocker.
Rasho can actually do both.
BTW:
It was kind of funny when KG dropped his shoulder into Bargs, and it was SO obviously a charge that the ref couldn't call a foul on Bargs, but it was SO obviously KG against an "inexperienced slow white guy" that they wouldn't call the charge on KG...

Re: Bosh or Bargnani- who to defend strong & elite bigs?
ideally you would want Bargs to be able to guard stronger bigs like (Dundan, Rasheed and KG)instead of having Bosh on them, but at this point in his career he's still really foul prone. So by default that leaves Bosh to battle with these guys
In time I believe Bargs will be able handle his own, once he gets the respect from the refs, but for now every ticky tack foul will be called on him until he gets afforded those "star" calls by refs.....all in due time!!

Can't complain about Bosh on Garnett in OT yesterday.. aside from that foul in the paint he played him perfectly.

Re: Bosh or Bargnani- who to defend strong & elite bigs?
I agree - Bosh forced Garnett into some tough shots. It's not like Rasho or Hump or Bargnani could have made those any tougher.
I wish they would have left Garnett in single coverage all game - let him get 30 points but don't let Posey, House and Allen get hot from beyond the arc.
Neither Bosh nor Bargnani look to develop into above average defenders in the post. Sooner or later, you have to believe the Raps will pick up someone that can come off the bench and block some shots down low.

Re: Bosh or Bargnani- who to defend strong & elite bigs?
^ good angle, I never really thought about that (about letting KG go off, but not letting him getting others involved). It was probably similar to Bostons plan to let TJ go off but not let him get the rest of his team invovled. We got killed with the 3's and it might of been better to just let KG go off in the paint.
