For those of you that live in Toronto don't you find it annoying that.....
Dispite the Raps recent play, being a playoff contender, and coming off one of the biggest wins of the year all that everybody(Media included) talking about is who going to get fired first JFJ or Maurice? I know Toronto a hockey town but why torment and stress yourself out with a last place team when down the hallway theres a winner that only gets 45 sec of pub on sportscentre. I getting tired of seeing the papers, radio and tv stations talk about how bad the leafs are when they should focus on the Raps and supporting them a bit if it wasn't for the Net I would get 0 Rap news
Raps get a huge win in double OT = swept under the rug
Leafs cancel a team photo = Talk of the town

One great thing about moving away from Toronto to NYC is NO MORE HOCKEY COVERAGE...seriously hated the leafs and the NHL for spamming all the sports media and airwaves...at least here in the States its a bit more balanced (Football, Baseball, Basketball).

It's funny how no matter how much coverage the Leafs get, Leaf fans remain as clueless about their team as the GM and coach they want beheaded... now that the Raptors are winning and the Leafs are losing, one "reason" I hear Queafs fans giving for their woes - I **** you not - is that they're owned by a basketball team that doesn't know how to run a hockey team.
I couldn't make this **** up if I tried.

that's a good way of putting it. the primary reason the leafs sell is because the media puts money into and attention onto them. that's sort of the way it is in most major markets. many fans don't 'choose' hockey so much as they don't really have a choice. and the fans that succumb to that pressure are often not as interested in the sport itself as they are in the story, which explains their often strange (uninformed?) opinions.
what i don't like about it is that it preys on an inferiority complex on the part of the people. maybe it instills that inferiority complex in the people in the first place, i don't know. i can guarantee you that the day the leafs win another stanley cup, media people the nation over will be stumped for a story. 1967 won't fly anymore. they won't have that to rub in fans' faces.
the boston red sox faced a similar predicament for many years. when they won, it was lights out. now, as soon as they become mediocre again, imo, the media won't have as many weapons at its disposal to sell the team- and i bet their popularity will wane. that's the business of sports. i shy away from that.
with the leafs, just ask yourself why you continue to hear how 'bad' they've been for so long. i mean, it's not really true. the maple leafs were among the top teams in the nhl for a 5-year period not long ago, extended playoff runs in each of them. they missed the playoffs the last two years but were right on the brink in both seasons. they're in the bottom bracket now, true, but why is it implied throughout the media that they've been scraping the barrel consistently for 40 years? that's not true. it's just the media giant flexing its muscles again, and the inferiority complex in the fans resurfacing and believing it, imo. it's a game that has very little to do with the sport, and it doesn't entice me.
the raptors will always be page 2- at least until the stanley cup comes rolling down bay. that's fine. the raptors are getting more attention this year, though, imo, and it's shown in the crowds. has anyone else noticed the difference in volume at the arena this year? there are evidently more spectators in the seats watching an entertainment event than there are basketball fans watching a basketball game. it's a bit of a concern for me. some of that has to do with the team's lethargic play at times- fans can't react like they used to- but i firmly believe it has more to do with the fans. i'm kind of worried that it'll only get worse from here. we'll see.
basketball has never been an 'event' for me- it's been a passion. it's tough to watch it become an event for everyone else; almost forces you to crawl up in a hole to get away from the spotlight of it.
peace

waiting through segment after segment of Hockey highlights(with postgame) for a Raptors highlight has become the norm in Canada, but I don't let it get to me anymore.
why? because my sole source for sports news now is NBA tv and ESPN

the one network i hate is sportsnet news. it says its sports your style in one of the ads, and all they show is hockey.

The team sucks think there dead last in the entire NHL they had a team photo scheduled but they canceled which sparked all this speculation about who about to get traded or fired its nuts, I swear this morning went down like this
-Turned on the radio-leafs talk
-Turned off the radio turned on the tv and switched to CP24 to get a quick weather report and while checking the weather BT got this girl in the streets at like 6:30am running around asking people who the leafs should fire or trade
-Switch from CP24 to TSN(I know big mistake) they ran 10min of NHL recap from the night before followed by about 45 sec of rap highlights they only showed the game from the moon foul to the double OT and quick post game comment by moon I swear it felt less than a min, after they put 4 guys on a panel and they start talking who MLSE should hire to "Colangelo-lize" the leafs I mean come on usually when a team losing you forget about them till they start winning again I know thats what happened with the raps and blue jays never seen a last place team get this much attention in my life

Do you guys honestly think its just people from Toronto who hear about the Leafs non-stop? OMG It is almost as bad here in Winnipeg. It's so stupid, the Leafs are brutal in every way but they find to turn the smallest event into such a big deal. It makes me sick. I ****ing hate the Leafs. Go Habs Go Baby!
