The Raptors need someone that can attack the rim and finish. Bargs tries, but misses way too many layups and dunks. He's still young, but he's gotta start finishing better around the basket.

Re: Can Bargnani be our bad***?

Gotta love the guy's aggression. He believes he can hit all these shots. You get the feeling that his percentages have to get better, after all, they have nowhere to go but up.

Deep down, I think Bargnani's an assassin. Really. I think he's quite capable of killing people for a living. His lack of conscience is going to make him a powerful weapon when his shots go down.

Bargnani makes us a dangerous, unpredictable team to face. He just has to hit shots. He hasn't caught fire yet, and maybe won't this season. Sooner or later the Magician will be shooting fire from his fingertips. That's the kind of badass we need him to be.

The guy's shot needs some major work. Is there a flatter shot in the league?

How about Travis Outlaw? But Travis makes them.

I was under the impression, before the draft that it was either Bargs or Aldridge. Right now it looks like Aldridge will be a better player, especially when you consider the amount of health issues he had last year - to the point that the Blazers trainers consider this to be Aldridge's rookie year, body development wise.

Aldridge played 63 games last year....2 college seasons....how can they consider him still to be in is rookie development?

Re-read what I said. I did not talk about his development as a player, but about his body development and ability to play consistently over the long season. He missed a lot of games at the start of the year and training camp because of a shoulder injury, he missed the end of the year because of the heart thing. The athletic trainer for the team discussed what it takes for rookies to adjust to the NBA schedule and he said that for most of them it takes a year - and that's what he attributes Roy's jump in productivity from year 1 to year 2. Aldridge made a bigger jump in production - but he is not consistent as Roy is - and the trainer said he considers this to be Aldridge's rookie year because of the chunks he lost (and could not train) last year.

Re: Can Bargnani be our bad***?

Not sure I agree......sure some things are lost, but being around an NBA team and gaining the knowledge is almost as valuable as being on the floor. By the trainers reasoning Aldridge should be due for another big jump in production for next year....I don't see that happening.

I actually do - as he has many games where he absolutely dominates and many games where he is closer to 12 points, 3 rebounds. If you expect that he will get better and will get more consistent - I can see him getting to be a 20/9 player (vs. 17/7 that he is now) - this is a big jump, imho. FWIW - his 17/7 is about the same as what he got last year in the only time he actually got real consistent starter minutes (about a month of the year) - so there is something to be said about this year's jump just being put in position to get consistent starter minutes.

Time will tell.

Re: Can Bargnani be our bad***?

He needs to play inside more, I don't know why Aldridge doesn't do that more often. His game is very similar to Bosh right now but he doesn't have Bosh's first step or ball handling.

He has been playing more inside in the last 5 or so games. In the first 3 games of the current road trip he was averaging 25.3 points and 8.7, a little less after the last one (4th game in 5 nights) - he only got 20/2 last night night.

I do not think he has Bosh's first step or ball handling or will ever have it - but he is less experienced and a little younger and he is a little longer and has a frame that can probably fill a bit more than Bosh. FWIW - His PER this year is higher than Bosh's 2nd year in the league (and yes, I know, Bosh was younger). It will be interesting to see if he makes the big jump that Bosh had in his 3rd year - I doubt it since Bosh became the man in Toronto in his 3rd year, while Portland will get Greg Oden to play next to Aldridge next year and Roy is not going anywhere.

I still think he will be a better player next year.

He did early in the season and is again lately. He scored 31 tonight going against Shaq and Amare - his 7th consecutive game scoring 20+. He has some very good fundamental low post moves and a very high release that is almost impossible to block. He had a bit of a mini-slump in the middle of the season where he was settling too much for face-up jump shots. Now that he's back to mixing up his low post game with his jump shot he's much more effective. But then, he's still just a second year player. So, he's still learning and will continue to get both better and more consistent.

With Oden at center next year instead of Joel Pryzbilla, Aldridge should get a lot more open looks with all the attention Oden will command in the low post.

As it is, Roy and Aldridge are the top two sophomores in the league. They are 1, 2 in EFF. Roy is the leading scorer and Aldridge is third. Aldridge isn't a great rebounder, but he leads all sophomores in both rebounding and blocked shots. If the 2006 draft was held today, I think most GMs would take Roy and Aldridge first and second. The order would depend on if you need a big man or a guard. Rudy Gay would probably be the third pick. Based purely on performance to date (a 7-foot jump shooter who can't even hit 39% of his shots and only pulls down 3.8 RPG), Bargnani would be lucky to be top 10. However, due to his size and "upside" some GM would probably take him in the 4 - 6 range.
