Rasho: In his prime

The Raptors (best ever?) center, Rasho Nesterovic, is playing as well as he ever has. I don't know what the stats are and the big fella has been the model of consistency throughout his NBA career but this guy has not fallen off with age at all. He's never been able to get off the floor and his hook has always been a little shaky but he's always been a winner in this league.

I love that Jose and TJ both feed him rolling to the hoop for easy hoops. I wish Andrea had his ability to catch and finish on balance. I'm always shocked at his ability to challenge/block shots and play great position defense without being able to get off the floor.

We talk a lot about trading him next year but you better have a strong backup waiting if you're going to give up a veteran center like Rasho.

Is Rasho still in his prime? What was his best season? Was he any different than he is now?

Re: Rasho: In his prime

If you watched Rasho this summer you saw that he had some gas left in the tank. He may only have two decent years left, but his vet presence is huge for this team!

Re: Rasho: In his prime

Well, Rasho is actually a year younger than Big Z and doesn't carry any of Z's injuries. Unless he gets hurt, I think he has 2-3 years of quality ball ahead of him.

Rasho's best season was in 02-03 back in Minnesota when he averaged almost over 11 and 6. I don't think the stats tell the whole story though. He has gotten smarter as a basketball player and is quite consistent when given minutes. If BC elects to keep him and let his contract run out, it might not be a bad idea to keep him around for something around 4-5 mil a year.

Re: Rasho: In his prime

despite his recent play I still feel the raps need to get more athletic at the C position starting with Rasho

Does That mean you get rid of Rasho, or that you get an athletic shot blocker and dump Primo and Baston?

Re: Rasho: In his prime

i believe the fans (and maybe the media) are a little too optimistic about rasho from a contractual standpoint. from what i know, his deal is effectively expiring now, this season. rasho has a player option for next year at 8 or 9M. he won't choose to walk on that but if he does, the raptors would be left with nothing.

i think too much is being said about how we're going to move his 'expiring contract' for an important piece next trade deadline because that's assuming a lot. it would only be true if he decided to pick up his player option and leave it at that. i think it's more likely that he: 1) renegotiates an extension for himself, which means no expiring deal next year; or 2) walks away in the hopes of finding a longer deal on the market.

if it's a mutual option (team + player) that might change things, but not much.

peace

Re: Rasho: In his prime

I don't see many teams looking at giving Rasho a long term deal that would be worth him opting out of 8-9 mil. Toronto may be the team that could make it work though...he knows he gets playing time, has a good group of guys around him, team is competitive, and the fans respect him. It sure would be nice to re work his deal and save some cap room.

Re: Rasho: In his prime

Its odd that nobody has picked up on this player option angle before.

Usually a guy will opt out just to get more overall guaranteed money. But in Rasho's case it may not be worthwhile unless he really wants to be on a title contender.

He could probably sign a 3 year deal in the 12-16 mill range pretty easily. That is anywhere from 4 to 8 mill above his current total. But if he just plays out this final year and doesn't get hurt he can sign a 2 year deal for 8 mill total at least so is probably better off that way.

The most probable outcome IMO is that he exercises his player option and expires after next season.

He isn't better than Antonio Davis, thats for sure. Mamadou N'Diaye is arguable as well.

Yup, hes playing great right now but do you really think he can maintain this at his age? do you think he can do this next season and maintain it? well maybe since he'll be in a contract year but I'd rather invest in a C who can put up close to of similar results who 5 years or so younger and has a higher ceiling
