Re: Some thoughts of the 2008 season
I agree with Ballocks that the team needs to make a decision on Bargnani. However, I don't think he should be the focus or even one of the focus of our season. This season a huge chunk of time was devoted to developing Bargnani. Mitchell pushed him into the starting center position and the team had to play through his struggles eventhough Nesterovic was clearly the better option. I don't regret the decision of giving Bargnani a chance to play but I think it's time for him to earn his playing time. If he makes a breakthrough then it's great for him and for the Raptors, but if he doesn't, it is time to move him. If we continue what we've done in the past 2 seasons, we are hindering the development of the team for the sake of developing Bargnani, and that just isn't worth it in my opinion.
A few are you are bang on about the thinking behind trading Calderon instead of Ford. Calderon's trade stock has never been higher while TJ's trade stock is at rock bottom. This is going to be a tough decision to make. Will trading Calderon remove some of the glaring weaknesses of our team and will TJ bounce back and become a better player worthy of the starting job? Or should we trade TJ for minor players/salary relief and hope that Calderon become so good of a player he becomes untouchable in trades? I hope BC picks the right path because I think this will ultimately determine how far this core of players can go. We have other trade assets but this is our main piece.

Re: Some thoughts of the 2008 season
i can see how trading calderon could land this team more talent, but i'm just not sure if tj can handle playing pg full time. he's too big of a risk, imo, which is why i would rather keep calderon. depending on how much the clippers need a pg we might be able to get maggette.
but i really hope we can get mike d'antoni. i'm sure even with minimal roster changes he would be able to do more with our team. Chris Bosh, Jose, TJ, Kapono, Delfino would definitely strive in his system, and i think bargnani and moon could play really well too.

Have you ever seen D'Antoni develop a player? If he was our coach you would see Jose/Parker/Kapono/Bosh/Rasho for 40mpg with TJ/Delfino off the bench and maybe Bargnani/Moon in garbage time

Seeing the success of Philly and the hawks(going against the odds they forced a game 7 vs the best team in the NBA) really makes me feel like **** as a Rap fan right now lol

Re: Some thoughts of the 2008 season
i just think its all the more reason to get much more athletic.. Much more. we need athletes. i'm not opposed to dealing calderon if the offer is overwhelming.
but philly & ATL get success running with athletes, defending & playing hustle in your face basketball.
big changes are coming, and regardless, i don't think a coaching change will make that much difference. smitchells only real downfall is his rotations, or lack of ability to make on the fly decisions.

I don't see how d'antoni wouldn't play bargnani more minutes. A coach like him probably dreams of coaching players like bargs. In any case, he would be playing a lot more minutes than rasho. I wouldn't really care if Moon doesn't play that much. I like moon, but he's a liability on offense and if d'antoni can't work with him then i have no problem with him giving other players more minutes.

Re: Some thoughts of the 2008 season
One name that is never mentioned here as contributing to our horrible year is Morris Peterson.
His loss may seem trivial when you consider that we brought in Moon, Delfino, and Kap. But as I pointed out during the year it is sometimes better to have a guy that is just good at every part of the game as opposed to several guys who are excellent in just one part of the game.
I was never a big MoP fan but looking at his total contribution I think we missed him being on the court for us. I didn't see other Raptors stepping up to take the charge every game like Mo did. Mo had no problems getting his 3pt shot up like Kap did this year. And while he was not a stopper on D he always made his guy work hard for his points. MoP competed and cared. You could see it on his face, and with the chest bumps, and other aspects of his game. The Raps lacked passion and fire this year.
Losing Mo and Garbo together hurt our competitiveness imo. Last year I could count on the Raps outworking our opponents most nights. Not this year.
And without Barg being that big spark or excitement off the bench this years club was downright boring on many nights. Kap showed in the playoffs that he could have been that spark of excitement all year, but Sam somehow kept him down. Hump and Graham showed some good energy and excitement at times as well but were ignored by Sam who was infatuated with Moon even though Moon's performance trailed off dramatically in the middle of the year.

Re: Some thoughts of the 2008 season
Mo Pete was a nice role player but i'm sure BC thought he would be able to replace him with better players. Delfino is a comparable player talent wise to Mo Pete, in fact Delfino is even more talented than Mo Pete. The thing that really bugs me about Delfino isn't his streaky shooting, but his inability to make good decisions... Seriously, for a guy who has accomplished as much as he has in world tournaments, you expect him to know better sometimes. Mo Pete on the other hand made good decisions and was clutch. I'm always afraid to see delfino on the floor late in games because i fear he would throw away games. BC, like most of us, probably didn't know delfino was this dumb.

Re: Some thoughts of the 2008 season
I think a lot of pistons fans felt that way about Delfino and I think that is the reason why he had limited minutes in detroit and especially under brown. He has no tolerance for dumbness

Re: Some thoughts of the 2008 season
he's had his 30pt games or so a couple times this season, he might not be the best Decision Maker on the team, but he's also the only guy on the team willing to take charges & really actually get physical and in your face.
he works on that shot, his decision making will be much less noticeable.
