Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
This is terrible. Now we get to see huge dunks and big 3-pointers get called as "Nice shot by Parker" instead of "OH MY GOODNESS, ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!?!"
You will be deeply missed Chuck. This is extremely depressing

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
Many times I have found Chuck to be annoying, but in a playful manner. Deep down I will miss him. He just always came ready to broadcast every game, even during blowout losses or those horrible seasons the Raptors had, he still remained positive & enthusiastic. I'm surprised this happened so abruptly though, there must be some hidden reason which we all aren't aware of...I just don't buy the whole 'family reasons' bit. Especially after signing a contract extension with the Raps & not giving any prior public notice regarding this (I may be wrong on this though). One thing however which I personally won't miss is the Salami & Cheese...it was kind of embarrasing to be honest. Best of luck in Chicago Chuck, we wish you all the best Swirsk.

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
^ you and me think alike brother.
hate salami & cheese and the like, but as you did, i also frowned upon chucks sayings sometimes in a respectful way however. also want to hear the real reason, however his wife probably just didn't want to be here or something. he did just become a canadian citizen so odd timing.
jack has some emotion to his calls "HELLO!!!!" so i really hope we'll see more of him. Leo is sarcastic goodness aswell, Smith & Jones.. meh..... Sherm Hamilton? hmm who knows
chucks knowledge and surprising fairness for the opposing teams will be missed and loved in chicago. the guy has a voice made for calling basketball, and backed it up with knowledge on ALL PLAYERS, and ALL TEAMS, not just his boys in t.o.
chicago lucked out, but they are going to use him for the radio? i guarantee chuck is better then the bulls current tv announcers.

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
It does feel like a very sad day, and I was never a big Swirsk fan. But he brought great energy to everything he did and connected with fans at all levels.
A disappointing season ends with even more disappointing news to start the offseason. Are the wheels coming off this franchise? Is Chuck abandoning a sinking ship? Probably not.
We never really knew much about his wife and family. And Chuck works long, long hours with the radio and tv gigs plus the blogs and emails and watching so much of other sports too (the guy was on top of everything). Could be a marriage thing where the wife was just not happy being alone so much - who knows. Not sure if his parents are still around.
His calls and homerism were slightly annoying at times but that is part of the job. He will be hard to replace. Lots of lousy play by play guys out there in nba.

I would love to see Charles Oakley do some commentating on a Raps game.

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
^^^ LOL that would actually be awesome. Oak would probably try to get in fights with the other team on the sidelines during timeouts. I won't mind Jack & Leo or even Paul Jones.

My first post in about 2 years - hi guys!
Chuck was a bit of a jock sniffer.
... and always resented him for creating a distinction between Jack Armstrong (who he had bumps with) and Leo "my main man Leo Reutins". But Leo was always the cool guy who in the regular world a dork like swirsk would never have been privey to being roadie buddies with.

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
I think Chuck lived vicariously through Leo's exploits at the 'library'.

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
Reading a couple of articles this now seems really lame:
Quote:
|
Swirsky said he first heard of any interest from the Bulls last Thursday in a conversation with Maple Leaf Sports officials. He said once he talked the situation over with his family, it became obvious the move had to be made.
|
So basically he got a job offer that was less money (elsewhere in the article he says he left money on the table here) and he and his family jumped at the chance to go back to Chicago.
How is that different from Antonio Davis?
So much for loving Canada so much.

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
he said when the bulls talk, you listen
he's just on the organizations famed jock, nothing new from chuck. he still did his job, very well, don't care much for his like for canada or his talk, but he was professional. antonio's wife just didn't like our numeric system in school Lol

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
Ive watched Chuck since 2001 and I am really gonna miss him. Even though I am not a Raptor fan anymore, I would record their games just to hear his entertaining commentary. He is my favorite commentator in the NBA and its sad to see he wont be on TV anymore.
anybody got a YT of the story they did on him with NBA Access from last year's playoffs?

Re: Chuck Swirsky leaves Toronto for Chicago
My Decision To Leave...
chucks last raptor blog;
May 7, 11:12 a.m.
It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you I have tendered my resignation as a member of the Toronto Raptors organization.
I am leaving the Raptors for family considerations which will remain private. I love Toronto, became a Canadian citizen this past January, and considered myself a "Raptor" for life. But when the Chicago Bulls requested permission to speak to me last week, I first considered and then accepted their offer in what I thought would be in the best interests for my family at this particular time.
My departure from Toronto and the Raptors is not done out of career ambitions. As the world sees it, I am probably doing everything in reverse. I am leaving money on the table, moving from TV to radio and stepping outside a wonderful comfort zone with great fans to take on a new challenge in my professional life.
Raptors' fans are tremendous. I fed off your passion, energy, drive and basketball intelligence. It was an honour when a child or adult would ask for a picture or an autograph. I was proud of seeing so many supportive "Salami and Cheese" and "Onions Baby Onions" signs throughout Air Canada Centre. I answered hundreds of daily e-mails and loved connecting with you through our daily CCI blog.
The Raptors Foundation and the magnificent work they do has left an indelible mark in my life. To see children in need assisted by the resources of the Raptors Foundation was indeed a highlight of my 10 years with the team.
There are just too many people to thank, so I won't even attempt too, fearing that just one omission will cause disappointment or the false thinking that they weren't important in growing the game of basketball through my involvement at MLSE. I will forever be grateful to Nelson Millman at the FAN 590 who took a chance hiring someone who had never done an NBA game before. And the support and encouragement given to me by Tom Anselmi and others at MLSE is irreplaceable.
The Raptors will find a superb broadcaster and Jack and Leo will bring their excellent analysis to you next season. Continue to support the Raptors. MLSE is a tremendous organization that I was extremely priviledged to be a part of. Ownership, management and staff are world class. Bryan Colangelo is a tremendous sports executive and leader. His drive to better the Raptors will continue this off season to provide you with entertaining basketball for the 2008-2009 season. You will want to be a part of the growing season seats fan base by renewing and considering purchasing ticket packages this off-season. Does it sound like a sales pitch? Yes. Because it's the truth. The Raptors will be extremely tough next year.
From time to time think of me when you look at the Bulls scores and drop me a line at swirsk054@aol.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
May God bless you and thank you for your kindness, appreciation and generosity throughout the years.
Sincerely,
Chuck Swirsky
