he Toronto Raptors signed Croatian guard Roko Ukic to a three-year contract on Wednesday.
The six-foot-five, 210-pounder was Toronto's second-round selection (41st overall) in the 2005 NBA draft.
Ukic, 22, played in Italy last season with Lottomatica Virtus Roma. He averaged 11.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 19 games, shooting 54.5 per cent from the field.
He began his professional career in 2000 with KK Split in Croatia, where he spent four seasons. He played in Spain for two more years, winning the Spanish national championship twice.
Re: The Raptors sign Roko Ukic to a 3 year contract
He has added 25 pounds since we first drafted the kid if those stats are correct, bigger body is more apt to play the 2. Definate possibility we see him taking some minutes there to play alonside Jose in the backcourt.
And @ Knick Killer I can see him abusing your guards tomorow
Re: The Raptors sign Roko Ukic to a 3 year contract
I was happy to know back in that draft that Ukic, a guy we considered at #16, was available at #41 and we took him. I hope a 3 year deal is not too much. I was reading the spanish paper when the rumors started that the he was going to come to the raptors. There were some negative comments like 'look at how low the nba talent has gone, they want people that we don't want anymore'.
Again this is one of a few bad comments on the kid ... i don't doubt his talent, shooting % and great size for a guard. I really hope he pans out with the raps.

I dont really understand members here. The hype for Ukic is really high from members here, but you guys dont expect anything from Hassan Adams and he averaged better numbers in the Italy league then Ukic did. Can you guys please explain to me your way of thinking??

They each had different roles with their teams, Roko is a point guard and shot 54% from the field. I think his game will lend well to the NBA and after a year or two of growth will be a valuable player for our team.
Adams is an undersized 3 man who has a sketchy history and brings supposed defense to the table. His very less than stellar play so far in spring league has made me feel that this guy will be stuck on the pine if he even dresses.

Well, some of us have been following this kid develop for years, from exciting young talent into one of the top point guards in Europe. He's been leading a team, even playing injured, on a very high level.
Numbers aren't everything. Ukic has learned to be a professional point guard these last two seasons. Check out his shooting percentages and remember that this kid has been playing a **** load more basketball than "17 games" this season.
That BC signed him for 3 years (the Calderon contract) is exciting. It shows an amazing amount of confidence in a young player and gives us his bird rights at a very low cost - less than many first rounders. Again we should reap the benefits of European development (Spurs are still putting on a clinic).
Check him out tonight. I hope his back is ok. I hurt mine last night in bed:smoothcriminal:

Because Hassan Adams has already failed once in the NBA while Ukic hasn't. Take Calderon for example, he wasn't a dominating player while he was in Europe but he is turning out to be one of the better guards in the NBA. You just don't know what will happen with Ukic until he plays in the league.
Re: The Raptors sign Roko Ukic to a 3 year contract
Roko looked solid in the first half vs. Canada. He has 5 boards and 3 points, he moves the ball very well and will get a tonne of passes that lead to the assist. Roko's body looks decent, not as skinny as I feared....not skinny at all.
Re: The Raptors sign Roko Ukic to a 3 year contract
get out the salami and cheese, this ball game is over

not the way I wanted team Canada to go out.....but I like the way Roko looks right now. I think he will be able to play a few minutes for us right away.
Re: The Raptors sign Roko Ukic to a 3 year contract
There has been so much yearning for Ukic on this board (for years) and I could never understand why. He was a mediocre PG in a pretty good Euro league. I hope that I'm proven wrong - I'm a Raps season ticket holder and would love to see the guy give us good minutes behind Calderon. He looked ok against Canada but the Canadian backcourt couldn't run with most WNBA teams.
God help us if Jose gets hurt for any amount of time though.
