Shopping List For Next Year
Obviously anyone with a brain knows that we need more depth in the frontcourt. But we need a centre. The Hakeem Olajuwon experiment blew up in our faces, just as I knew it would and we really need a centre, be it through a trade now, or at the start of next season.
To get the guy that we want, we would have to give up something. You just can't give up crap and expect to get quality. Guys that I would like to target for next year would be Magloire from the Hornets. He really is a tough nut and is the kind of guy that we really need. Strong, tough, uncompromising and a great shotblocker and rebounder. He would hold down the fort at centre and stop penetration. We need a true beast down low, who is ready to play 30 minutes plus per game along with Davis.Obviously, the Hornets would not give him up easily, but we still need to get aggressive in the trading period and at least make some enquiries about some of these guys.
Who wouldn't want to come and play with Vince Carter??
Other players that we could try and steal are Brad Miller from the Pacers. Remember, they are going to have to fit in the resigning of Jermaine, Artest, Reggie, Brad Miller,Bender into their salary cap, so maybe we are in there with a chance to get him. Unfortunately, we do not have the cap room, so we need to work out a sign and trade for him, if possible and give up some contracts to the Pacers. Once again, we might have to give up a Morris Peterson type player, to get the help required at centre.
This is our glaring need. Remember if we flame out this year, it is my honest opinion that changes will be made and guys will be made scapegoats. If we are that desperate for frontcourt help, we have to be prepared to give up quality to get quality. We do not have enough room in the cap, to outright steal guys through free agency. So we need to trade and get more aggressive there.
Also, no more giving up anymore first round draft picks when trading. We gave up one to get Junk Yard Dog, one to get Hakeem and one to get Murray. It is only going to count against us, in the future, when we end up having no depth and no younger players ready to step up and be counted. From now on, we need to keep our picks and we should not be giving up any more first round picks, for veterans.
Grunfeld needs to be questioned, because as I have said, we have no real depth and we are so close, to the luxury tax. Our average players are overpaid. So, we need to keep our first round picks in the future and have some competition for places in the team!

We don't just need depth; we actually need a starter! Jelani McCoy is not the answer, Nate Huffman is scared, and Michael Bradley has never been subjected to the rigor of an 82 game season.

The Hornets would not give him up at all. He is one of the few true centers left in either conference, and he will be a Hornet for life if Bob Bass knows whats good for him.

The only trouble is that the Pacers need another young, talented SF like Portland needs another PG. We don't have anything to offer them for Brad Miller, plain and simple.

I agree with the saving of the draft picks. Other than that, this is going to be our team for 2 or 3 years at least because of all the money we have tied up in these players. Grunfeld made his decision and now he has to live with it!
